Peacocks Overcome 16-Point Deficit, Stun Bulldogs on the Road

Upper Iowa has overcome a 16-point deficit on the road, and has stunned Truman State 88-86 in overtime.

The first quarter was highlighted by sophomore Amelia Valentino having the best quarter of her collegiate career as she shot 3-3 from 3-point range, scoring nine points in less than two and a half minutes. Junior Mia Huberty led the team in first quarter assists with three, and the Peacocks found themselves down 20-24 at the end of the first. Fifth-year Katie Tornstrom knocked down a three-pointer to open the scoring in the second quarter, quickly making it a one-point game. The Peacocks would quickly find themselves in foul trouble however, as Truman State would score ten of their next 13 points at the free throw line. Senior Kayla Bohr led the Peacocks in second quarter scoring as she made a three pointer and back-to-back layups giving her 11 points in the half. Senior Cassidy Pagel made a two-point jumper with two seconds remaining, ending the half with UIU down 41-38. Huberty once again assisted on three baskets in the quarter, finishing with six assists at halftime.

Truman State shot very efficiently to start the second half, and extended their lead to 53-43. The Peacocks responded with a 7-0 scoring run as Valentino scored her fourth three-pointer of the game before junior Helen Staley and Tornstrom scored on layups. The Bulldogs would continue to draw fouls and they would score six of their next ten points at the line. With an eight-point lead, Truman State swished a three-pointer from the corner at the buzzer and would head into the fourth up 66-55.

The Peacocks started the fourth quarter scoring on a Huberty layup, reducing the lead to nine. Tornstrom would continue her dominant defense recording back-to-back steals, which gave her four in by the third quarter. Following a 7-0 run from Truman State, Tornstrom made a layup giving her double figures and Bohr scored a layup the next possession on Huberty's ninth assist of the game. Freshman Ava Privet checked in for the first time in the fourth quarter, and made an immediate impact as she swished a three-pointer from the corner and assisted on Huberty's made three which reduced the Bulldogs lead to 76-69. Following a Truman State layup, Tornstrom answered with a three-pointer, cutting the lead to 78-72. Huberty made a fadeaway jumper from the post on Upper Iowa's next possession and Tornstrom recorded her season-high sixth steal of the game and made both of her free throws after being fouled. With 36 seconds left, Upper Iowa was down two-points, and the Bulldogs had the ball. Upper Iowa's defensive efforts led to a quick steal by Privet who was immediately fouled on the loose ball. The Peacocks were in the bonus and Privet stepped up to the line and knocked down both free throws to tie the game. Truman State had a good look with three seconds remaining, but they missed their midrange shot, sending the game to overtime.

The Bulldogs scored the first basket in OT and made a free throw to quickly take an 81-78 lead. That lead could have stretched to five, but fifth-year Brooke Evenson made a phenomenal block at the rim. Pagel drew a foul with 3:03 remaining, and knocked down both free throws, reducing the lead to one. Upper Iowa's clutch free throw shooting continued as Tornstrom made both of her free throws one possession later, giving the Peacocks just their second lead of the game. She would follow this up with her biggest three-pointer of the season, as she switched a shot from the top of the key to extend Upper Iowa's lead to four. Truman State answered with a layup, but Tornstrom threw a dime to Evenson under the hoop, who made a layup of her own. Upper Iowa's lead would shrink to 87-86 as the Bulldogs once again responded, this time with an and-one layup. With 18 seconds remaining, the Peacocks were up 88-86 after Tornstrom went 1-2 from the line. Truman State attempted a three for the win, which bounced off the rim, completing Upper Iowa's comeback victory, where they were down by as much as 16.
