A duo of soccer athletes,
Dexter Garrett and
Haylie Hutchinson, were awarded the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award, announced by the league office on Thursday evening.
The GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees are student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
Garrett competed in his second season with the Upper Iowa men's soccer program where he led the team in minutes on the field after starting all 16 games he played in. The Petersfield, England native tallied two goals this season, including the game-winning goal against St. Ambrose earlier in the year.
Hutchinson wrapped up her debut season with Peacock women's soccer after appearing in all 17 games with 15 starts. She led the team this fall in assists with three, all coming in their 3-0 victory over Minnesota Crookston. That mark placed her second in the record books for the number of assists in a game (tied with Lauren Smith, 2004).
