The Peacocks have fallen to 2-3 following their 74-60 loss on the road against the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons.
The Peacocks quickly took a 5-0 lead with fifth-year
Brooke Evenson making a two-pointer and junior
Mia Huberty knocking down her first three of the game. Sophomore
Amelia Valentino made Upper Iowa's second three-pointer of the game, which tied the score 12-12 with 3:17 left in the 1
st quarter. The Tritons would then score nine unanswered points, taking a 21-12 lead with four seconds remaining. The Peacocks would inbound the ball to junior
Helen Staley who was fouled on her half-court shot attempt as time expired. Staley made all three of her free throws, ending the quarter with a score of 21-15. Staley would follow that up by scoring the first basket of the second quarter, and senior
Alaina Brenning would later make a three-pointer and a mid-range jumper. Senior
Cassidy Pagel was dominant on the glass in the second quarter, recording three offensive rebounds. While the Peacocks defended the perimeter very well, the Tritons scored six layups in the quarter which included two and-one's. Their deficit would increase, as the first half ended with the Peacocks down 40-26.
Upper Iowa hit two three's to start the second half, and fifth-year
Katie Tornstrom's defensive efforts led to a steal and a layup. Staley would later score back-to-back buckets on a fadeaway jumper and a layup, which brought UIU within eight points, making the score 46-38. Following a UMSL layup, Huberty hit back-to-back three pointers in a 22 second-span, bringing the Peacocks within four points. UMSL would later score six unanswered points, but their streak ended as Valentino made her second three-pointer of the game. She was assisted by
Sydnee Nelson, who recorded her third assist. Senior
Kayla Bohr scored the final basket of the third quarter, making it a nine-point game with UIU down 60-51. Evenson scored an and-one layup to start the quarter, and made her free throw, reducing UMSL's lead to six. Following back-to-back two pointers by the Tritons, Bohr swished a three-pointer on an assist from Staley, giving her four assists on the day. Despite their comeback efforts, UIU would come up short, losing 74-60.
Huberty led all Peacock scorers with 14 points while shooting 4-7 from three. Evenson finished with 12 points and led the team with eight rebounds. Staley recorded her season-high 11 points and put together another all-around performance, recording seven rebounds while dishing out a team-high four assists. Brenning scored eight points on 3-7 shooting and had a game-high two steals. Pagel recorded a career-high four offensive rebounds and Nelson added five rebounds of her own and recorded three assists.
The Peacocks will continue their road-trip in the state of Missouri, as they take on Truman State at the end of the week. The match against the Bulldogs will take place on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m.
