It had been 343 days since Indianapolis last lost a soccer game, 359 days since the Peacocks recorded their last shutout, and Indianapolis' star goalkeeper, graduate Kieran Brown had never allowed more than one goal in a game all season. All three of those streaks have come to an end as the Upper Iowa Peacocks have defeated the 7
th highest ranked team in the nation, 2-0!
The Peacocks had their hands full going up against the 8-0-4 Greyhounds, and they would need to take advantage of every opportunity they earned. The Peacocks were given a throw-in three minutes into the game, which they immediately took advantage of. Graduate midfielder
Daigo Adachi's throw sailed over numerous defenders, was headed by sophomore defender
Florian Deick, bounced off the ground into the air, and was kicked into the left corner of the goal by junior defender
Daniel Pranger. Pranger scored his first goal of the season while Adachi recorded his seventh assist, which is the second most in the GLVC. The Peacocks great play earned them all the momentum in the world to start the game, and they never looked back. Deick nearly gave UIU a 2-0 lead less than three minutes later, but his shot was saved. The Greyhounds would attempt seven shots, before taking their first shot on goal in the 40
th minute. Their shot was saved by graduate keeper
Archie Watts, who would later record his second save just a minute before halftime. Upper Iowa would go into halftime with the lead, knowing they still had lots of work to do if they wanted to complete the upset.
Indianapolis was very aggressive to start the second half, attempting five shots on goal in the first 25 minutes. Four of their shots were saved by Watts, who made a phenomenal diving save in the 69
th minute, while the Peacocks also recorded their first of four team saves in the 62
nd minute. UIU was only able to get one shot off on goal in the second half in the 70
th minute, which resulted in their second goal of the game! Junior forward
Frider Blunck dribbled past three Greyhounds defenders, made a beautiful pass to sophomore midfielder
Mateo Rodriguez, whose shot on goal beat the keeper and found the back of the net in the top left corner. Cheers erupted from all around the stadium and on-air as the Peacocks took a 2-0 lead, resulting in Rodriguez being swarmed by all his teammates! This would be Blunck's fourth assist on the season, giving him a total of 14 points which is the second most in the GLVC. The only player he trails is Rodriguez who now has six goals and six assists, giving him a GLVC leading 18 points.
12 shots were attempted during the final 20 minutes of the game, none of which came from the Peacocks. The Greyhounds attempted 32 shots in the game, 12 of which were on goal, while the Peacocks only attempted six shots with four being on target. Watts made another sensational diving save in the 76
th minute, which he deflected away with his feet. He would record his 8
th and final save of the game right before time expired, matching his season high. The final whistle came a few seconds later, resulting in Peacocks players swarming the field in celebration and triumph! The Peacocks, who were projected to finish second to last in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll have done the impossible, handing #7 Indianapolis their first loss of the season.
Upper Iowa has moved from 9
th to 7
th place in the GLVC with their historic victory, meaning they now control their own destiny as eight teams qualify for the GLVC Championship Tournament. They will be seeking another victory during their final home game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 2:30 p.m. as they take on 7-2-4 Lewis on Senior Day.
