The No. 9 Upper Iowa wrestling team completed the sweep in their opening weekend of Northern Sun Conference duals with a 26-10 win over No. 21 Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. The Peacocks won seven of the ten bouts and scored bonus points in three matches behind a fall and two major decisions. The win pushed UIU's record to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
The Peacocks registered a 16-7 advantage in takedowns, while the Wolves picked up advantages in reversals 5-2.
The Wolves opened with a 9-0 major decision by Landon Fischer at 125 pounds, but the Peacocks rallied with a pair of decisions at 133 and 141 pounds.
Kaden Anderlik scored a 7-1 decision with three takedowns, while No. 5
Tate Murty won a tight 13-9 decision over Kolton Roth thanks to an early reversal and four-point nearfall combination and two more takedowns as UIU took a 6-4 lead.
No. 11 Wyatt Turnquist scored a 5-0 decision over
Ethen Doty to return the home team to the lead, 7-6, but the visitors rattled off four straight wins from 157 through 184 to take control of the dual.
Eric Faught won a 6-4 decision with a takedown in each of the final two periods, while No. 2
Chase Luensman scored a 12-4 major decision fueled by five takedowns.
Cael Meyer was trailing 5-4 in the third period, but came up with a huge win by fall (5:59) midway through the third period.
Cameron Lopez capped off the four-straight wins with a 3-1 win at 184 pounds behind an early takedown and second-period escape.
Northern State won the 197-pound bout as No. 2 Cole Huss defeated
Colter Bye 3-1, but No. 9
Zach Ryg closed the dual on a high note for Upper Iowa with a 12-1 major decision at heavyweight highlighted by three takedowns and a four-point nearfall.
At the completion of the dual, the teams faced off in one extra match that featured a heavyweight bout between UIU's
Jordan Baumler and NSU's George Bolling. Baumler scored an early takedown and then turned it into a win by fall in just 25 seconds.
Next weekend, the Peacocks return home for their first action in Fayette since Nov. 23. Upper Iowa will host the program's Alumni Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 21-22 which culminates with the Mike Olsen Alumni Dual on Sunday. UIU hosts Augustana on Saturday at 4 p.m. and then welcomes No. 24 Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the Mike Olsen Alumni Dual. UIU's alumni in attendance will be recognized to the home crowd prior to the action.
