Minot State University completed the series sweep over the Upper Iowa baseball team on Sunday with a 7-0 win in Minot, N.D. The win improved MiSU's record to 15-13 overall and 9-4 in the Northern Sun Conference, while UIU fell to 4-18 overall and 2-9 in the conference.
RJ Martinez was dominant on the mound for the Beavers throwing a complete game shutout to improve to 4-0 on the season. Martinez struck out 13 Peacock batters while scattering five hits across eight innings on the hill.
Grant Ver Voort started for UIU and fell to 0-1 after four innings of work; he allowed four runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts. UIU used four pitchers on the day, three of which allowed runs in the time in the middle of the diamond. Austin Shingledecker threw two innings and kept MiSU off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings and struck out four batters.
Upper Iowa managed five hits off of Martinez including a pair of singles from Jerry Garcia, a double by Jake Hilmer and singles off the bats of Nicholas Vite and Ethan Sawyer.
Jordan Williams and Ricky Apodaca carried the Minot State offense driving six of the seven runs in. Williams hit a RBI-single through the right side in the second inning. MiSU added an unearned run on a passed ball in the third to get ahead 2-0 early. Apodaca drove in two Beavers with a single in the fourth, before the long ball came into play in the fifth and sixth innings. Williams hit a solo home run in the fifth and Apodaca launched a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 7-0.
The Peacocks will return to Fayette to host the Beavers of Bemidji State University on Tuesday, Apr. 5. UIU and BSU will lock up in a Northern Sun double header beginning at noon. The games were originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday in Bemidji, Minn. The Beavers will be the home team in Tuesday's games at Robertson Woods Field.
