The University of Mary snapped Upper Iowa's four-game win streak and kept the Peacocks away from a series sweep with a 13-4 win in Bismarck, N.D.
The Peacocks led 2-0 early, but the Marauders rallied with five unanswered runs by the end of the fifth inning and added eight more in the sixth through eighth innings.
After the loss, UIU falls to 8-19 overall and 6-10 in the NSIC, while UMary improves to 11-19 overall and 3-11 in the conference.
Jake Hilmer drove in the game's first two runs in the top of the second inning with a single to left. The hit came with the bases loaded and plated
Tanner Stein and
Jerry Garcia.
After UMary scored two in the bottom of the second, two in the fourth and one in the fifth, Upper Iowa was able to cut into the home team's lead with two runs in the top of the sixth. Nicholas Vite drove in a run with a ground out and Hilmer pushed another run home with a sac fly to right. The runs pulled UIU within one, 5-4, heading into the bottom of the sixth.
The Marauders answered immediately with a two-run homer off the bat of Jon Prokop in the sixth to reclaim their three-run advantage and then added two in the seventh on a two-run long ball by Noah Hull and four runs in the eighth inning highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Calvin James to secure the 13-4 victory.
Grant Ver Voort (0-2) suffered the loss after three innings in his start allowing four runs on five hits and four strikeouts.
Parker Wakelyn (3-1) earned the win with five innings of work; he allowed two unearned runs on four hits, while Liam Sommer worked four innings for a save shutting out the Peacocks and recording three strikeouts.
Hilmer had two hits and three RBI for Upper Iowa, while
Ethan Sawyer and
Kainoa Torres accounted for the other two hits in the game.
Kyle Jameson, Derek Shoen and Hull each tallied three hits in the game for UMary.
The Peacocks will remain on the road for their scheduled double header on Tuesday, Apr. 12. Upper Iowa will face St. Cloud State University beginning at 1:30 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minn.
