Upper Iowa continued their weekend in Missouri on Saturday with a pair of non-conference games against William Jewell College. The Cardinals picked up a sweep in the double header by counts of 5-3 in game one and 12-2 in game two. After the losses, UIU falls to 2-5 overall, while WJC improved to 6-2 on the season.
The Cardinals were the first to score with a Quincy Aldrich home run in the bottom of the second inning, but
Ethan Sawyer and A.J. Friedrich both hit a long ball in back-to-back at bats to leadoff the top of the fourth to put the Peacocks back on top 2-1. Cale Luzum tripled with two outs later in the frame, but was stranded on third.
WJC retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two run homer by Alex Epp and pushed the lead to 5-2 in the sixth inning with two runs on a hit, an error and some misfires between the UIU pitcher and catcher.
UIU got one run back in the top of the seventh after loading the bases with a walk and two hit batsmen.
Jerry Garcia picked up an RBI on a ground ball to third.
Colin Lacey suffered the loss after 5.1 innings; he allowed five runs, three were earned, on just five hits while striking out six batters.
Sam Marhefke got the final two outs in the sixth.
Jake MacDonald got the win with 6.1 innings of work while scattering seven hits for three runs. Drew Dant scored the save after getting the final two outs and ending the Peacock threat in the seventh.
In the second game, the Cardinals scored 12 runs on 14 hits, while holding the Peacocks to two runs on seven hits.
After WJC scored two runs in the first and third innings and one more in the fourth, the Peacocks were able scratch the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fifth when
Samuel Grushkin hit his first home run of the year.
The Cardinals strung together five hits for five runs including two doubles and a triple to race out to a 10-1 lead. A second home run by Epp pushed the lead to 11-1 in the sixth.
Garcia homered for UIU in the seventh, the team's fourth deep shot of the day, but William Jewell scored the final run of the game to set the final score at 12-2.
Jarrett Ramer took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in four innings on the hill.
Jackson Bodinson earned a complete-game win with seven innings of work while striking out three Peacock batters.
Upper Iowa and Williams Jewell will close out their three-game series on Sunday with a single game starting at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
