For their first contest of the weekend, Upper Iowa women's basketball traveled to Sioux Falls, S.D to take on Augustana University. The Peacocks were defeated in a 79-56 result, dropping their record to 4-7 overall and 0-6 in conference play. The Vikings improved to 9-2 (4-2 NSIC).
UIU got off to a slow start, only netting 11 points in the first quarter in comparison to the 23 scored by their opponent. The sophomore duo of
Mia Huberty and
Helen Staley managed to tally all of their team's points in the opening session. Huberty converted one triple and four free throws while Staley contributed two field goals.Â
The Peacocks countered in the second quarter by outscoring the Vikings 19-10, only trailing by two points (32-30) going into halftime. The third quarter consisted of traded baskets until the three-minute mark when Augustana went on a 7-0 run that they used as momentum to take control of the game.
Upper Iowa struggled in the fourth, only scoring nine points while Augustana netted an additional 23. They held UIU's leading scorer Lydia Hack (17.8 points per game) to only six in tonight's contest.Â
Huberty led the crew with 13 points, converting 8-11 from the charity stripe.
Katie Tornstrom added nine points and five rebounds, while
Callista Rochon-Baker tallied eight points and five boards.
Aislinn Duffy paced the Vikings with a double-double, hauling in 11 rebounds and scoring 19 points. Her teammate Lauren Sees also contributed 19 points in the contest.Â
The Peacocks shot 16-80 (32%) from the field and 4-17 (23.5%) from three point land. Augustana went 30-70 (42.9%) from the floor and 5-18 (27.8%) beyond the arc.
The Peacocks will head to Wayne, Neb. to round off their weekend of play against Wayne State College. Tip off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.
