Upper Iowa women's basketball spent their snowy Sunday in an NSIC duel with Wayne State College. The Peacocks battled back from a double-digit deficit that eventually sent their game into overtime. They came up just short in the extra session, dropping 77-70 to the Wildcats. Upper Iowa fell to 4-8 (0-7 NSIC) on the season. Wayne State improved to 9-2 overall and 5-2 in conference.
In similar fashion to yesterday's contest, UIU started off slow in the first quarter, only netting nine points while giving up 15. The Wildcats stayed consistent in their lead and pushed it out to as much as an 11-point advantage in the second quarter. After the first 20 minutes of play, Upper Iowa trailed 33-35 as they headed into the locker room.Â
The Peacocks trailed 45-35 with four minutes left in the third quarter. Scoring from
Lydia Haack and a three-point dagger from
Mia Huberty made it a one possession game (45-42) going into the fourth segment.
Katie Tornstrom started off the fourth with back-to-back triples, propelling the Peacocks past the Wildcats for their first lead of the night.
Upper Iowa was leading 50-49 with eight minutes left of play as they continued to push forward their advantage. They led by as many as five points, 56-51, before starting to suffer from the defensive pressure of the Wildcats. As Wayne State turned up their full court press, the Peacocks found themselves in tight spots and turning the ball over.Â
UIU turned the ball over 32 times, which ended up being their kryptonite in regulation. As they held a 59-57 lead with 18 seconds on the clock, the Peacocks folded under the full court press, pitching a bad pass and allowing the Wildcats to gain possession and tie up the game.
Wayne State carried their momentum into the extra session, scoring a triple right after the tip. Huberty attempted to carry her team through overtime as she tallied seven of the team's 11 points. Upper Iowa fizzled out as Tornstrom was sent to the sideline with five fouls and
Helen Staley came off the court due to an injury.Â
UIU shot 26-58 (44.8%) from the floor and 6-18 (33.3%) beyond the arc. WSC netted 25-74 (33.8%) from the field and 7-22 (31.8%) from long distance.
Haack led the Peacocks with 18 points, going 5-11 from the floor and converting 8-9 from the charity stripe. Tornstrom tallied 16 points, shooting 5-9 and 3-4 from three point land.
Lexie Lodermeier and
Helen Staley combined for 21 rebounds.Â
Lauren Zacharias pulled her team to victory with 32 points, going 8-12 from the floor and 3-3 from long range. She also hauled in seven boards and shot a perfect 100% from the free throw line, converting 13-13.
The Peacocks step away from the hardwood for a bit, but will return to play after the holiday season. Their next action will take place in Fayette on Dec. 31 against Winona State. Tip off with the Warriors is scheduled for 2 p.m.Â
