Upper Iowa wrapped up their home slate with a matchup against Southwest Minnesota State University. In fast paced fashion, the Mustangs defeated the Peacocks in an 83-47 result. SMSU improved to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in conference. UIU dropped to 4-6 (0-5 NSIC).
The Mustangs started off strong as they outscored the Peacocks in the first quarter 28-15. Their upward trend continued as they netted an additional 18 points in the second quarter, commanding a 46-27 lead going into halftime. SMSU held Upper Iowa to only eight points in the third quarter. In addition to preventing their opponent from scoring double-digits, the Mustangs tallied an additional 26 points in that quarter.
The Peacocks shot 18-54 (33.3%) from the floor in comparison to the Mustangs who went 32-73 (43.8) from field goal range. Lock-down defense from SMSU limited Upper Iowa to 1-12 from beyond the arc. On the other hand, SMSU found their stride from long range, netting 11-30.
Lydia Haack led UIU with 21 points on 7-12 from the field and 7-8 from the charity stripe. She also led the team with six rebounds in the contest.
Southwest Minnesota State was paced by Jenna Borchers who tallied 17 points on 6-12 shooting, including netting 5-9 from three-point land. She led her squad with seven rebounds and four assists.
Down the stretch, Upper Iowa will return to play one week from now when they travel to Augustana University on Saturday, Dec. 17. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The squad has a quick turnaround as they head to Wayne State College the following day. Tip off on Sunday is set for 1:30 p.m.
