The Wildcats controlled the pace of play in Saturday's NSIC South Division football game at Wayne State. The home team scored 28 points in the second quarter and 21 more in third in the way to a 56-14 win over Upper Iowa. WSC improved to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the division, while UIU fell to 1-8 overall and 0-5 against the south.
Wayne State racked up 604 total yards in the game including 331 yards and four touchdowns on the ground and 273 yards and for touchdowns through the air. The Wildcat defense held their guests to 179 yards of total offense thanks to a stout line up front that held UIU to 16 rushing yards on 23 attempts.
Upper Iowa scored a touchdown just seconds into the second quarter to knot the score at 7-7, but Wayne State took the ensuing kickoff and then scored a touchdown on the next seven straight possessions. While the Wildcat offense was moving the ball up and down the field, the defense held UIU to four or less plays in a drive on eight of their remaining 10 possessions in the game.
Darryl Overstreet Jr. connected on 14 of his 29 passes for 163 yards and one score, while
Desean Phillips and
Aboubacar Barry ran for a combined 43 yards with Barry reaching the endzone for the game's final score in the fourth quarter.
Cole Ewald caught three balls for 46 yards and a touchdown, while
Isaiah Gray pulled in two catches for 56 yards.
Trevor Thompson tallied nine tackles for a team high, while
Cejai Parrish,
Tyler Owen,
Peyton Bieber, and
Deion Duncan all picked up six tackles.
The Peacocks are slated to play at home on the turf in Harms-Eischeid Stadium for their final two games. Upper Iowa will host Winona State University on Nov. 5 and the University of Sioux Falls on Nov. 12. Both games are set for 12 p.m. kicks.
