In their last home game of the 2022 season, Upper Iowa fell to the Vikings in a 2-0 result. The Peacocks shift to 2-10-4 overall on the season and 1-7-4 in the conference. Augustana improves to 8-6-2 for the year and 8-4-1 in the NSIC.
The Vikings opened the scoring after just three minutes of play by breaking down the left hand side. The shot was parried by
Isabelle Wagner into the path of an Augustana forward who finished from close range. The Vikings controlled the tempo of the game in the next ten minutes following the goal, however, the Peacocks grew into the game and started to create opportunities of their own. Freshman
Rachyl Benavides came closest with a thunderous effort that was tipped onto the crossbar by the Vikings shot stopper.
After heading into halftime down by one goal, UIU attempted to carry their momentum from the first half into positive areas in order to find their way back into the game. Senior
Leah Willenbring found herself adding to the offensive output, carrying the ball down the right side of the field, but came up with no end product.
Augustana doubled their lead after a curling left foot effort from 25 yards out with 68 minutes on the clock. The Vikings capitalized on a failed clearance by the Peacocks, and the resulting shot found its way into the top corner. The Peacocks remained resilient, as they came close to pulling themselves back into the game when Benavides pushed out in transition and ended up being brought down inside the penalty area. She stepped up for the resulting kick, but the Augustana keeper was equal to her effort, diving low down to the right tallying another save on the evening.
Wagner pulled in a career high of ten saves in the game despite conceding twice.
Upper Iowa hits the field again on Sunday, Oct. 23 when they travel to take on Wayne State. Kick off with the Wildcats is scheduled for 1 p.m.
