Upper Iowa fell 14-3 in Sunday afternoon's matchup with Rockhurst University. Following the game, the Peacocks enter NSIC play 1-3 while the Hawks kick off their season 3-1. Alex Greene capped off an impressive weekend going 2-3 at the plate and driving in a pair of runs.
Rockhurst went ahead in the bottom of the first. A pair of Hawks who reached on a walk and a double, respectively, scored on a throwing error committed by the Peacocks' third baseman. RU tacked on five more runs in their following set of at-bats. Three walks and five hits including a double provided the push for the Hawks' big inning.
Grant Ver Voort came in to relieve starter Sam Marhefke in the second inning where he fanned two Hawks and allowed one earned run to cross the plate. Upper Iowa got on the board in the top of the fourth. Nolan Friedrichs and Alex Greene walked before Samuel Grushkin singled to right field, loading the bases. Kyle Routhieax then earned a base on balls walking in Friedrichs and cutting the Peacocks' deficit down to 7-1.
The Hawks extended their lead to double-digits with another sizable inning in the fifth. Rockhurst registered five more runs via four hits, three of which went for extra bases, and a pair of free passes. The scoring spree put RU up 12-1 through five.
Colin Lacey, Kiley Brown, Jason Katz, and Steve Marhefke all made appearances in the later innings. Katz retired all three batters he faced, two of which he set down on strikes.
RU added two more runs in the sixth extending their lead to 14-1. Upper Iowa scored two runs themselves in the top of the seventh after Greene singled to left field bringing home Jake Hilmer and Matthew Hall who reached on base hits. The rally was not enough, however, as the game ended due to the run rule following the third out of the frame.
UP NEXT… Upper Iowa will host Southwest Minnesota State University for their first home series of 2021 on Mar. 20-21.
