Upper Iowa fell to Minot State University 3-2 on Thursday afternoon. After falling down 3-0, Upper Iowa scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to narrow its deficit. The Peacocks had the go-ahead and tying runs on base in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh but were unable to push them home. Following the game, Upper Iowa moves to 3-5 (2-2) while Minot State becomes 6-3 (4-0). The game was initially scheduled to be followed by another but inclement weather cut the series short.
Minot State got on the board first in the top of the third. The Beavers had two men on following a single and a hit-by-a-pitch. Declan Buckle then came around to score for MiSU on a deep fly ball to right field making it a 1-0 ballgame.
Peacocks starter Jarrett Ramer went 2.2 innings before being relieved by Keaton Parker in the third. Ramer allowed just one earned run on one hit and a pair of free passes while striking out five. Jordan Williams led off the top of the fifth inning with an opposite-field solo shot, his sixth through eight games, extending Minot's lead to 2-0.
Parker's day came to an end shortly after. The freshman allowed just one earned run on one base hit and a strikeout in 1.2 innings of work. Brennan Sefrit followed Parker allowing the Beavers to tack on another in the top of the sixth. Sefrit walked one on and hit the following batter before Williams singled to the left side driving one run in and picking up his second RBI of the day. The New Market, Iowa native also set one Beaver down on strikes in his 0.2 innings of work.
In the bottom half of inning, Upper Iowa cut its deficit down to 3-2. Noah Gyldenvand led off with a steaming line drive the third baseman was unable to handle. Jake Hilmer followed with a single into the left centerfield gap pushing Gyldenvand to third. Alex Greene walked to load the bases with Peacocks. A pair of Peacocks scored as Hogan Penny registered an RBI walk before Samuel Grushkin was hit-by-a-pitch to score another. UIU was unable to tie things up as a pair of Peacocks went down on strikes to end the big inning.
Blake Thiesse and Chris Webber threw the final two innings for UIU allowing just one hit and two walks while fanning four cumulatively. Upper Iowa had men on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the seven. However, UIU was unable to push the tying run across the plate ending the game at 3-2 in favor of Minot.
The Beavers saw three arms in the game with Zach Newman picking up the win after allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one in 5.1 innings on the mound. Aaron Kern earned the save pitching a scoreless inning, walking two, and striking out one. Ramer was awarded the loss despite a strong performance after allowing an earned run on a hit and two walks while setting five down on strikes.
