The Upper Iowa University women's basketball team was done in by decisive victories from the Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul in the first and third quarters. CSP won the first period 22-10 and the third period 27-15, claiming a 77-47 victory over UIU at the end of the contest. The Bears posted a 40-18 advantage in points in the paint as they benefited from 19 offensive and 43 total rebounds compared to Upper Iowa's 22 total boards. The Golden Bears boost their record to 9-3 (7-3 NSIC) while UIU falls to 1-11 (0-10 NSIC) on the season.
Turning Points…
The Peacocks' Katie Tornstrom scored the first points of the game for the second day in a row, hitting a 3PT shot at the 8:28 mark in the first quarter. The Golden Bears responded with a 12-0 run over the next 4:23. The teams split the quarter the rest of the way, but the Bears took control and finished the opening period with a 22-10 lead. Concordia-St. Paul opened the second quarter with five straight points, but Upper Iowa answered with a 9-2 surge that included 4 points from Alaina Brenning. That UIU run cut the CSP lead to 10 at 29-19, but the Golden Bears closed the half on a 6-0 spurt to lead 35-19 at the break.
The third quarter Upper Iowa offense was led by Brooke Evenson as she shot 2-2 from the field and made her lone attempt from behind the 3PT line, finishing with 6 points in the quarter. The Peacocks scored 15 points in the third after scoring 19 through two quarters, but the Golden Bears kept pace as they scored 27 in the period. CSP ended the third quarter on a 7-0 run that included 5 points from the free throw line to take a 62-34 lead into the final frame and would extend their run into the fourth as they started the last quarter on a 7-0 run as well. The Peacocks closed the game on a 13-8 run but would ultimately fall by a score of 77-47.Â
Peacock Leaders…
Evenson led the Peacocks in scoring with 10 points in the contest and contributed 2 steals, 1 assist, and 1 rebound. She finished the weekend with totals of 22 points, 15Â rebounds, 5 steals, and 3 assists.Â
Savannah Domeyer scored 6 points on 3-4 (75%) shooting from the floor while grabbing a season-high 6 rebounds as well. She finished the double-header with totals of 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks while shooting at an 8-14 (57.1%) clip from the field.
Cassidy Pagel scored all 6 of her points for the Peacocks in the final 6:02 of play as she made all three of her attempts from the floor. Her 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist were all season-highs for the freshman.
Golden Bear Leaders…
Sydney Zgutowicz was the game's top scorer as she finished with 20 points on 8-13 (61.5%) shooting. She topped it off with 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks as well.Â
Lindsey Becher scored 12 points for the Bears on 5-7 (71.4%) shooting while securing a game-high 4 steals.
Sarah Kuma also scored 12 points for CSP, hitting 4-9 (44.4%) shots from the field and making a game-high 3 of her 6 attempts (50%) from three. She added 3 steals, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist.

Upper Iowa takes their final road trip of the season in what will be the penultimate weekend of the 2020-21 campaign. The Peacocks will play the Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato at the Taylor Center in a double-header scheduled for Friday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m.
