Upper Iowa fell to Winona State University in its regular season finale on Saturday afternoon by a 90-67 count. The loss was the Peacocks' first in nearly a month. UIU still has a chance at first place in the NSIC South should Wayne State College drop their game Sunday, Feb. 21 versus Augustana University. Following the game, the Peacocks moved to 10-6 on the season, 8-4 in the NSIC while Winona State finished 7-6 overall, 5-5 in conference play.
Winona State used an 18-5 run to gain an early double-digit advantage. Andrea Lo Biondo led the Warriors amid the stretch with seven points putting WSU ahead 22-11 with 10:53 to play. Winona pushed out again on a 12-4 advantage, extending their lead to 39-22 at the 3:35 mark, WSU's largest of the period. The Warriors remained ahead at the break, 43-29.
Joe Smoldt led the Peacocks with 11 first-points, all of which came in the first 6:36 of play. Turnovers, interior defense and perimeter defense hurt UIU in the first half. Upper Iowa committed 10 turnovers, allowed a 17-31 (54.8%) rate from the field, and gave up 24 points in the paint during the first frame.
Winona State scored 12 unanswered to push their lead to 27 with 13:51 to go. The Warriors converted 5-6 (83.3%) of their attempts from the field amid the stretch while the Peacocks went 0-6 from the floor. A 10-3 stretch highlighted by a pair of trifectas from Jackson Joens cut the Peacocks' deficit to 20 with 10:26 left to play. That was as close as UIU would get as Winona State carried the lead to a 90-67 victory.
