Cajuste (6') put UIU up early, Lofdahl scored twice (19', 40') and had three assists, Martins Soares (49') made it 4-1, and Smith (65') iced the 5-2 win.

The Upper Iowa men's soccer team won their fourth consecutive GLIAC tilt as they outscored St. Cloud State by a 5-2 margin. The Peacocks improve to 7-3 (4-3 GLIAC) on the season with the win, while the Huskies fall to a 3-7-1 (2-5 GLIAC) record on the year with the loss.

St. Cloud State University took the first shot of the match at the 1:18 mark, and each team earned a corner kick within the first five minutes, but Upper Iowa struck first on a counterattack after the SCSU corner. Daniel Pranger played a ball to a streaking Tate Lofdahl, and Lofdahl crossed a ball to Carson Cajuste that was put in the back of the net to give UIU a 1-0 lead at the 5:18 mark.

The Peacocks took the next shot of the match in the seventh minute, but St. Cloud made a hard push to tie the score with three shots in a 59-second span from the 9:41 to the 10:40 mark. Despite the barrage, none of the shots were on goal, and the UIU defense withstood the push. Lofdahl put a shot on goal for UIU early in the 18th minute, but it was a St. Cloud shot in the same minute that found the back of the net as the Huskies evened the score at 1-1 at the 17:57 mark.

Upper Iowa quickly regained their lead just 33 seconds later after Cain Smith and Stan Cargill assisted Lofdahl on a goal at the 18:30 mark to put UIU up 2-1. The Huskies attempted to even the score once again with a pair of shots and a pair of corner kicks coming in the 21st minute, but the Peacock defense came out unscathed.

The UIU lead would be increased to 3-1 at the 39:59 mark thanks to Lofdahl's second goal of the match. Martin Voll took a free kick from a few feet off of the Upper Iowa endline, and the ball sailed into the UIU attacking zone before Lofdahl used his speed to beat the SCSU defenders once again and knock in a goal past the charging goalie for the score. The Huskies made another counterattack late in the first half that saw them take three shots and a corner kick in the final four minutes, but the score remained 3-1 at the half.

The Peacocks wasted no time in extending their lead in the second period as Italo Martins Soares scored on the first shot of the half at the 48:02 mark off of an assist from the battery of Lofdahl and Smith. The newfound 4-1 lead for Upper Iowa would be short-lived as St. Cloud scored just 39 seconds later to cut the deficit to 4-2 off a corner kick.

Upper Iowa's lead went back to three in the 65th minute after Smith scored off an assist from Lofdahl to put UIU ahead 5-2. St. Cloud took the next three shots of the match and put them on goal, but Osvaldo Alonzo saved all three attempts. The Peacocks took the final two shots of the contest, and their 5-2 advantage stayed intact through full time as Upper Iowa secured the victory.

PEACOCKS OF THE GAME...

  • Tate Lofdahl stuffed the stat sheet with seven points in his 67 minutes as he tied for the match-lead with five shots, including a match-high four shots on goal. Lofdahl's two goals tied for a UIU-high in a match this season, and his three assists match the all-time mark for a Peacock.
  • Cain Smith converted his lone shot attempt to score UIU's fifth goal, and his two assists tied for the second-most in a match in UIU history. The midfielder also played full time and helped give the Peacocks the advantage on both the offensive and defensive sides.
  • Italo Martins Soares recorded a goal in the sixth straight match, finishing with two shots (one on goal).
  • Carson Cajuste scored the opening goal of the match as he connected on his only shot.
  • Martin Voll was one of the Peacocks to play the full 90 minutes as he contributed to a strong UIU defense and notched an assist on Lofdahl's second score.
  • Daniel Pranger added to the stout Peacock defensive effort, put his lone shot attempt on goal, and collected an assist on the first goal of the match.
  • Stan Cargill's shot attempt was on target, and his assist on Lofdahl's first goal put UIU up for good.
  • Osvaldo Alonzo was credited with four saves and held firm against an SCSU attack that took 20 shots and five corner kicks.

STATS OF THE GAME...

  • The Huskies finished with a 20-16 shot advantage, but the Peacocks held a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal and converted on half of those on-target shots.
  • SCSU out-shot UIU 13-8 in the first half, but the Peacocks finished the period with a 3-1 lead and out-shot the Huskies 8-7 in the second half.
  • St. Cloud earned a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks in the first half, but Upper Iowa claimed a 2-0 advantage in corners in the second period.
