The Upper Iowa men's soccer team secured their fourth shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over Northwood University in Midland, Mich. The Peacocks improve to 8-5 (5-5 GLIAC) on the season with the win, while the Timberwolves fall to 3-10-1 (2-7-1 GLIAC) with the loss.

The Peacocks took the first 14 shots of the match and out-shot the Timberwolves by a 15-1 margin in the first period, but the score remained 0-0 at halftime. Upper Iowa put eight of their 15 shots on goal while not allowing any to Northwood. UIU also earned four corner kicks in the first half, but the NU defense held up against a potent offensive attack from the Peacocks that could not convert its chances.

The Timberwolves opened the second period with a shot on goal just 2:14 into the half, but Osvaldo Alonzo secured the save on the first on-target shot he faced. The Peacocks took the next four shots of the match, but the Timberwolves took three consecutive shots on a possession in the 65th minute as they looked to score. The Upper Iowa defense blocked every attempt as none of the shots made it to Alonzo, and the Peacocks thwarted the attack.

The next dangerous attack came from the UIU offense, and a connection from Marcus DeLeon to Tate Lofdahl to Stan Cargill ended with Cargill putting the go-ahead goal into the back corner of the net at the 67:24 mark.

After a problematic attack from Northwood in the 85th minute was cut short by an offsides call, Upper Iowa made a counterattack that saw them get deep into NU territory. Italo Martins Soares sliced through the NU defense and got a pass to Cain Smith, who was deep in the NU box, and Smith tapped the ball back to Martins Soares, who doubled the UIU lead to 2-0 at the 85:36 mark.

Each team would take another off-target shot before the end of the match, but the score remained 2-0 after full time as the Peacocks secured the shutout.

COACH'S QUOTES... "We put in a solid performance today, and eliminated a lot of the mistakes that we made last weekend to get today's result. Northwood stood firm through the first half, but I felt we deserved to break the deadlock and we came through to score two well-worked goals. Everyone played their part today, whether on the field, on the sideline, or back in Fayette. Without everyone's collective efforts these past months, these results don't happen. We had to grind it out today, and and we're thankful for this squad of players who come to work every day." - Head Coach, Willie McGowan

UP NEXT... The Peacocks will stay in Michigan for a match against Saginaw Valley State University on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. CST (12 p.m. EST) in Saginaw, Mich.
