Upper Iowa fell to Wayne State by a 99-71 count on Friday evening. The Wildcats led in the contest wire-to-wire. With the defeat, Upper Iowa falls to 2-5 overall, 0-3 in the NSIC.
Wayne State used their home court advantage by immediately jumping out to a 10-0 run to begin the game. Upper Iowa did not hesitate to retaliate, pushing out on a 19-9 advantage of their own to tie the game at 19 all with 10:43 left in the half. Six points from Dylan Jones in addition to a trio of takeaways by the UIU backcourt and a cumulative 6-10 (60.0%) rate from the floor fueled the stretch for the Peacocks.
The Wildcats then took off on an 18-4 stretch including 11 unanswered points to go up 46-29 with 3:10 to go in the frame. Jordan Jansen scored six points and came down with three boards during the run helping propel WSC to their largest lead of the half. Jansen officially registered a double-double at the 4:57 mark, he finished the half with 12 points on a 6-8 (75%) rate from the floor to go along with 11 rebounds, two assists and a block. Wayne State remained ahead 48-32 at the break. The Duax brothers excelled on the defensive end as Lucas and Max Duax combined for five first-half steals.
An 11-2 Wildcats' run put WSC up 70-44 with 13:28 to go. Jareese Williams rattled off eight straight points in response to cut down the Peacocks' deficit to 19. Wayne extended their lead to as high as 29 with 5:20 remaining after nine unanswered points put WSC up 89-60. The two teams' reserves closed out the game giving Sam Allen the opportunity to score his first points of the season and ending the game with a 99-71 final score.
