Upper Iowa men's basketball picked up a commanding 107-84 victory over St. Cloud State University on Saturday afternoon. The Peacock starting five carried the scoring load as every starter finished in double-figures and combined for 72 of UIU's 107 points. Saturday marks the first time that the Peacocks have scored in triple-digits since January 2020. Following the win, Upper Iowa improves to 1-0 while the Huskies fall to 0-1.
The Peacocks used a 16-5 run with 12:04 on the clock to propel ahead of St. Cloud 30-21. Joe Smoldt hit a pair of trifectas amid the stretch. Upper Iowa then held a 10-4 advantage sparked by a three-point play from Lucas Duax that gave UIU a 40-27 lead, their largest of the half. The two teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the period, leaving the home team up 50-41 at the break.
Duax led the Peacocks with 14 points on six out of eight attempts from the field, five rebounds, and a pair of steals in the first half of action. Jake Hilmer added nine points on a 75% rate from the floor and three assists. As a team, Upper Iowa outscored their opponents 12-2 off of turnovers in the first frame. Ilya Tyrtysnik and Caleb Donlensen went a combined 8-10 to account for 20 of St.Cloud's 41 first-half points.
UIU came out of halftime red hot with an immediate 15-4 run fueled by seven points from Dylan Jones that put the Peacocks ahead by 20. The Peacocks added a 10-0 stretch to go up 83-59 with 10:18 remaining. Upper Iowa reached the summit with 5:41 to go when Joe Smoldt sunk a three-pointer to put the blue and white up 94-67, the largest lead of the day. Upper Iowa's reserves closed out the contest and secured a 107-84 victory. Chris Olson, who missed the entire 2019-20 season due to injury, scored his first basket since February 2019. Sean Biernacki scored his first career points with Upper Iowa in the final minute of play.
