Getting to know UIU Baseball’s Colin Lacey

In today's virtual interview, Pete the Peacock gets to know UIU baseball's Colin Lacey. Colin is a redshirt sophomore from Pleasant Hill, Iowa who came to Fayette three years ago from Dowling Catholic High School. He is majoring in accounting.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of the spring season, the Upper Iowa Athletics Department is spending the next few months spotlighting many of our Peacock student-athletes whose spring seasons came to a premature end.

In today's virtual interview, Pete the Peacock gets to know UIU baseball's Colin Lacey. Colin is a redshirt sophomore from Pleasant Hill, Iowa who came to Fayette three years ago from Dowling Catholic High School. He is majoring in accounting.

PETE: What made you want to be a collegiate student-athlete?
COLIN: My love for baseball. I want to play for as long as I can.

PETE: What have you learned about what it takes to be a student-athlete?
COLIN: I have learned about finding a balance between baseball and life. I have learned to be able to have fun in life when I am not playing at my best.

PETE: What advice would you give to your 14-year old self?
COLIN: I would tell myself to power through high school; college is much more fun, enjoyable, and relaxed!

PETE: What is something most people don't know about you?
COLIN: I really enjoy singing. Not in public though.

PETE: What is your favorite thing about Fayette?
COLIN: I love everything about Fayette. I love the people, the school, and free golfing at Big Rock. I am home in Fayette, and I am so grateful for everything Fayette has brought me.

PETE: How do you want to be remembered?
COLIN: I want to be remembered by people at Upper Iowa as a good person, but I want to be remembered by my opponents as a competitive pain in the butt.

PETE: What's the best thing that has happened to you in the last week?
COLIN: The state of Iowa did not shut down the golf courses. I cannot wait for this pandemic to be over.

PETE: What is your dream job if money wasn't a factor? Why?
COLIN: My dream job would be being a Major League Baseball player or a professional golfer. Playing a game for a living would be amazing.

PETE: Who are three people (dead or alive) you'd love to have dinner with? Why?
COLIN: Clayton Kershaw and both of my grandpas. I want to eat with my grandpas because I miss them a bunch, and they really helped me mold into the baseball player and person I am today. I would want Clayton Kershaw to join the group because I think he would fit in well with the two of them, and he is my favorite baseball player.

PETE: What is your most memorable sports moment?
COLIN: My most memorable sports moment was winning against Bemidji State on opening day at U.S. Bank Stadium during my freshman year. It was my first career start, and win, it was so much fun.

PETE: What fictional character (movie, TV show, book, cartoon, etc.) would you want to be for a day? Why?
COLIN: I would want to be Tony Stark (Iron Man) for a day. I would love to be able to fly around in the Iron Man suit and do things that billionaires can afford to do.

PETE: Do you have any collections? If so, what?
COLIN: I have a collection of baseball cards from when I was younger, but I have not done much with them in a few years.

PETE: Do you believe in aliens or ghosts? If yes, why?
COLIN: I do believe in aliens and ghosts. The universe is so incomprehensibly large that I believe we cannot be the only planet with life. For ghosts, I have no logic or explanation of why ghosts might exist, but I just feel like they do.

PETE: What is your dream vacation spot? Why? What would you want to do there?
COLIN: My dream vacation spot would be a cabin in the mountains in Park City, Utah during the winter. While I was there I would enjoy the view and go snowboarding.

PETE: What piece of clothing do you wear the most?
COLIN: I have a favorite light blue sweatshirt from Routine Baseball that I wear a lot. It is super comfortable and matches Peacock colors.

PETE: What is your favorite restaurant in the world? What do you order?
COLIN: My favorite restaurant in the world is probably Jethro's in Altoona, Iowa. When I go I order a full order of boneless wings, covered in Jethro's Original Sauce, and waffle fries.

PETE: What does your dream life after retirement look like?
COLIN: My dream life after retirement would consist of golfing daily and hanging with my family. I would also like to have a pool or hot tub. The location is totally up in the air.

PETE: What are three things you cannot live without? Why?
COLIN: The three things I cannot live without is my bedside fan, some form of entertainment (running low during quarantine... please help), and social interaction. I need my fan because it keeps me cool and produces noise so I can sleep. I need entertainment because I will probably hit the brink of insanity if I am not doing anything. I need social interaction because some people make me smile. I do not need too much though because I do not like all people on the planet.

PETE: What is the priciest thing you've ever splurged on?
COLIN: The most expensive thing I have ever "splurged on" was a trip to Jamaica. That was my first big purchase ever, and I am a frugal person, so that will probably be the only big purchase for a looong time.

PETE: Do you play any musical instruments?
COLIN: When I was younger I used to play the tuba. That instrument was the same size as me, so it was an interesting sight.

PETE: If you were a rap artist, what would your stage name be?
COLIN: Probably Aller-G or something dumb like that. I am allergic to pretty much everything outside.

PETE: If you had a podcast, what would it be about?
COLIN: If I had a podcast it would be about college life in Fayette. Interesting things happen in Fayette and I think people would find it entertaining.

PETE: What category would you own in a trivia competition?
COLIN: Geography. When I was younger I had a weird obsession with the globe, maps, and Google Earth.

PETE: What would you bring on a one-way trip to Mars?
COLIN: If Mars was livable and I only needed personal items I would bring a backpack with a baseball, a glove, and a big tape measure. The gravity on Mars is much lower than Earth, so I would be throwing some bombs.

PETE: What is your go-to home workout?
COLIN: Well, my favorite thing to do is play long toss, but due to the lack of partner because of COVID-19, my partner is my dog, Clayton. We play some pretty intense and long fetch. He is such a good boy.
