The Upper Iowa softball team dropped a pair of contests at the PFX Spring Games on Wednesday as both Assumption College and No. 16 University of Indianapolis were able to quiet the Peacock offense. Upper Iowa scored just one run on seven total hits while the two teams of Greyhounds combined for 19 runs on 20 hits.
Kennedy Newell and Jordyn Brennan combined for four of UIU's hits, while Kaylee Frenette, Abby McKay and Kaitlyn Carlson each contributed one. Frenette scored UIU's only run following an error by a UIndy infielder.
Assumption 8, Upper Iowa 0 (5 Innings)
An rbi-double midway through the bottom of the first gave the Greyhounds a 1-0 advantage after the leadoff hitter singled through the right side and was sacrificed over to second by a teammate. After a trio of 1-2-3 half innings, Assumption put up a crooked number in the third thanks to four runs on three hits and a Peacock error.
In the top of the fourth, Jordyn Brennan started things off with her second hit of the game. She moved to second on a error before Ali Green laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Upper Iowa in prime position to score. Unfortunately for the Peacocks, back-to-back outs ended the threat to soon. Upper Iowa threatened again in the fifth by loading the bases but was not able to push a runner across. Assumption was able to claim the run-rule victory with three runs on five hits in its half inning.
Sydney Wilcox received the loss after tossing 2.0 innings and giving up five runs, three earned, on four hits and a walk. Emily Kisch entered the game in the third inning and allowed three runs on six hits and two walks.
Indianapolis 11, Upper Iowa 1 (5 Innings)
The two teams engaged in a tight ball game in the beginning as the Greyhounds led by just one at the end of three full innings. While UIndy was able to cash in on their lone base runner, Upper Iowa left all five stranded during that span.
A three-run homer in the top of the fourth opened up a 4-0 lead for the Greyhounds. UIU and UIndy then traded fielding errors that both resulted in a score during the fifth frame. The Greyhounds put the game away for good with six runs on five hits and an error in the top of the sixth.
Abby McKay suffered the loss after surrendering 11 runs, eight earned, on 10 hits and a walk in 5.1 innings. Sydney Wilcox entered the game to record the final two outs in the sixth inning.
