The Upper Iowa women's basketball team suffered a 71-49 loss to Minnesota State University-Mankato on Friday evening despite a strong start. The Peacocks outscored the hosts 16-12 in the first quarter but were held to just 11 points in each of the remaining quarters while Minnesota State tallied 59 points for the 22-point advantage. The Mavericks improved to 15-10 (12-9 NSIC) with the win, while the Peacocks drop to 3-24 (2-19 NSIC).
The Mavericks scored the first five points of the game before Upper Iowa was able to hold the home team scoreless for the next five minutes while capitalizing on four of five shot attempts for a 9-5 lead. Minnesota State tied the game with back-to-back layups but four points from Jessica Musgrave and a triple from Brooke Evenson put Upper Iowa in front by seven with 1:33 left in the leg. The Mavericks then generated a 17-2 run extending into the second quarter for a 26-18 advantage. The Peacocks pulled within four, 26-22, but another big run fueled by three treys from Tayla Stuttley gave MSU a 41-27 buffer at the break.
Minnesota State outscored the Peacocks 19-11 in the third quarter to push its lead out to as many as 23 points in the frame. The two teams then traded 11 points in the final quarter as the Mavericks earned the 22-point victory.
PEACOCKS OF THE GAME…
- Jessica Musgrave registered her fourth career double-double with 16 points on 7-of-17 shooting and 10 rebounds. Musgrave also led the team with three assists and added a steal
- Erica Armstrong hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds and led the team with two takeaways
- Brooke Evenson tallied nine points and six boards
STATS OF THE GAME...
- Upper Iowa committed 31 turnovers, the most against a conference opponent and second-most this season. Minnesota State was able to convert UIU's miscues into 27 points
- The Peacocks outrebounded the Mavericks 46-37, UIU's second-best rebounding differential this season
- Upper Iowa shot just under 40.0 percent from the field with 20 baskets in 51 attempts compared to the Mavericks' 35.2 percent shooting clip (25-71)
- Minnesota State had 25 scoring opportunities at the line but only cashed in on 16, while Upper Iowa converted five of seven attempts
