Peacocks Defeated by Golden Bears in Final Regular Season Game

The Upper Iowa women’s basketball team closed out the 2019-20 regular season with a 90-39 road loss to Concordia University, St. Paul on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 15-13 overall and 12-10 against Northern Sun opponents to finish fourth in the NSIC South Division with a tie-breaker over Winona State University. Upper Iowa fell to 3-25 overall and 2-20 in the conference.

The Upper Iowa women's basketball team closed out the 2019-20 regular season with a 90-39 road loss to Concordia University, St. Paul on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 15-13 overall and 12-10 against Northern Sun opponents to finish fourth in the NSIC South Division with a tie-breaker over Winona State University. Upper Iowa fell to 3-25 overall and 2-20 in the conference. 

The Peacocks struggled from the field throughout the game hitting just 13 field goals overall and three from deep. On the other end of the court, the Golden Bears converted 56.1 percent of their shots with 32-made field goals including eight three-pointers. Concordia St. Paul also scored 18 from the charity stripe compared to UIU's 10, and enjoyed a big night on the glass with 16 more rebounds than the Peacocks.

Upper Iowa managed to capture a 10-9 lead in the first quarter thanks to two free throws from Megan Peterson and eight points from Jessica Musgrave. The Golden Bears then went on to outscore the Peacocks 27-8 the rest of the half for a 36-18 lead at the break. Upper Iowa shot just 20.8 percent as a team with Musgrave being the only Peacock to score from the floor in the first half. 

The Peacocks had their largest scoring output in the third quarter with 15 points but were still outscored by 14 as Concordia-St. Paul pushed its lead out to 65-33 at the end of three quarters. Upper Iowa was then held to just six points in the final 10 minutes as the Golden Bears pulled away even more for the 90-39 win.

  • Jessica Musgrave shot 46.2 percent from the floor to lead all scorers with 17 points. She accounted for six of UIU's 13 total baskets, while adding team-high rebounds (8) and assists (2)

STATS OF THE GAME...
  • Concordia-St. Paul shot 56.1 percent from the field (32-57), 40.0 percent from distance (8-20), and 69.2 percent at the line (18-26) compared to Upper Iowa's 24.1 percent from the floor (13-54), 11.5 percent from deep (3-26), and 71.4 percent at the stripe (10-14)
  • The Golden Bears outrebounded Upper Iowa 44-28 and outscored the Peacocks 46-8 in bench points, 30-5 in points off turnovers, 42-16 in the paint, and 22-8 in second chance points

UP NEXT... Upper Iowa will head to Duluth, Minn. for the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Women's Basketball Tournament. The Peacocks will play the Bulldogs of University of Minnesota Duluth who clinched the top seed in the NSIC North Division on Wed. Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m.
