The Panthers of Davenport University (2-1) scored a goal less than three minutes into Friday's match and then held on for a 1-0 victory over the Peacocks (0-1-1). UIU and DU got together on Pattison Field on Friday for the second match of the Peacock Soccer Classic.
UIU outshot their guests 5-3 in the first half, but the Panthers converted the one shot they needed. In the second half, Davenport controlled the ball and earned a 12-5 advantage in shots.
Aimee Kemper took three shots and two were on target, while
Jayna Morikawa took two shots. The final shot from Morikawa came in the final seconds of regulation and nearly found the back of the net. Kemper crossed a pass into the box and Morikawa headed the ball toward the post. DU's goalie got just enough of the ball to keep it out of the goal and preserve the 1-0 decision.
Natalie Rudrud stopped 7 Ranger attacks while allowing just one goal in the opening minutes.
TURNING POINT... Less than three minutes into the match, Cassandra Bosworth sent a pass toward the net from the midfield line. Katherine Steiner ran under the pass taking it in stride and then sending it past a charging
Natalie Rudrud for the eventual game-winning goal.
QUOTABLE(S)...
"Obliviously we are disappointed that we lost, we don't like to lose. Overall, I thought we worked hard and competed. We have to get better and stop giving away goals. We aren't making horrendous mistakes, but we just lose our focus and the teams have capitalized on it. We need to score first, it's tough to come from behind. We went all out at the end of the match, but we ran out of time. It was our second game of the season, hopefully we can learn from the mistakes we're making. We want to be in the business of winning these games."
