The Upper Iowa baseball team split their non-conference games against #14 Quincy University Hawks on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks walked off in the first game thanks to three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take game one 7-6. UIU rallied late in game two, scoring six runs in the final three frames to top the Hawks 10-6.
The Peacocks will return to action this weekend for a pair of double-headers against the UMD Bulldogs. All four of this weekends' games against the Bulldogs are set to be played at Quincy University.
Game One: Quincy 7 – Upper Iowa 6
The Peacocks got the offense firing out of the gate when
Kyle Routhieaux doubled to drove in
Tony Salato to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.
Quincy answered with a solo shot in the bottom half of the frame but Upper Iowa were able to tack on two more after
AJ Friedrich went yard and
Riley Braughton drove in
Steve Diderrich Jr. with an RBI single to put the Peacocks ahead 3-1.
The Hawks had cut the gap to 3-2 in the bottom half of the second, driving in a run with a single to center. Braughton started the Peacock's three-run fourth by doubling to left to drive in his second run of the night. Diderrich scored on an error by the Hawks and Braughton was able to come home on a
Zac Cain sacrifice fly to give Upper Iowa the 6-2 advantage.
The Hawks were able to cross the plate five times in the final two innings of the game to close out the game 7-6. After filling the bases with no outs in the bottom seventh, the Hawks plated three runs with the final two coming on sacrifice flies.
In his second start of the season, junior
Duncan Snider struck out eight Hawks over his five innings of work, with six of his K's coming against Quincy's one through four hitters.
Parker Kray and
Colin Lacey took the hill for the final two innings of the game, allowing five earned runs on six hits with Kray being credited with his second loss of the season.
Game Two: Upper Iowa 10 - Quincy 6
In the second leg of Tuesday's double-header, it was the Hawks who drew first blood, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Upper Iowa wasn't able to respond until the top half of the third when Cain evened the score at 1-1 with an RBI-double that drove in
Hogan Penny. The Peacocks plated another run in the fourth off the bat of
Jack Thode, driving in
Cody Ryan with a single to right center.
The fifth frame saw action from both squads, Diderrich singled down the line to bring home Salato to expand the Peacocks lead to 4-1. The advantage was short lived as the Hawks leveled the score with a three-run blast over the left-center field fence.
The Hawks gave UIU the lead after they balked in a run in the top of the seventh to put the Peacocks on top 5-4. Upper In the next inning, UIU plated two more runs; one coming when
Cole Scieszinski knocked in Cain with an RBI single, and then Friedrich scoring on an error by the shortstop to put the Peacocks up 7-4. Quincy added one of their own in the bottom half of the frame to close within two runs.
In the ninth, the Peacocks added three security runs off the bats of Cain, Friedrich and Routhieaux scoring on an error to give the Peacocks their tenth run of the game. Quincy plated one run in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough to dig out of the hole that the Peacocks had put them in.
Five Peacocks took to the bump in the win against the Hawks, combining for six K's over their nine innings of work.
Alexander Morales had the ball to start, allowing one run and facing one batter over the minimum in his three innings of work.
Chris Webber,
Evan Rice, and Logan Dewulf came in from the bullpen for four innings of relief work, striking out five and allowing just five hits to the Hawks.
Blake Thiesse was entrusted to close out the game for the Peacocks, surrendering just one run on one hit over his two innings of work. Dewulf was credited with the win, his first of the season.
Upper Iowa moves to 2-2 on the season after splitting with # 14 Quincy while the Hawks will push their record to 11-3.
