The Peacock tennis team opened their spring season in Winona, Minn. on Saturday afternoon against the Mavericks of Minnesota State University, Mankato. Upper Iowa won the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2, but the Mavericks claimed the match 5-2 thanks to five wins in the six singles matches.

"I am proud of the effort of the team today," said Head Coach Leo Millet. "We lost three close decisions, but we still competed hard. Today was a great learning experience for this young team."

Shakhnaza Zhanatova and Maryke Badenhorst teamed up for a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles and Deimante Krivickaite and Lavanya Singh partnered for a 6-2 win at No. 2. Lara Peco and Chelsea Scott dropped the No. 3 doubles match 6-3.

The Mavericks turned the momentum to their side with several hard fought wins in the singles play. Erin Streeter defeated Zhanatova 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 and Monika Ryan outlasted Badenhorst 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 at No. 2. Badenhorst cruised through the first set, but a back injury slowed her play considerably.

Peco forced a tiebreaker in the final set of her match at No. 5, but Valerie Bresnahan scored the 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 1-0 (12-10) win for the Mavericks. At No. 6 singles, Lauren Goth defeated Scott 6-2, 6-1.
