Upper Iowa's tennis team was back on the courts in Winona, Minn. early on Sunday morning, but injuries and the threat of inclement weather led to a 4-0 win for the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs. The Peacocks were without
Maryke Badenhorst for the dual after she left Saturday's dual with an injury.
SMSU won the No. 1 doubles match 6-4 as Olivia Watzxke and Fatima Murphy defeated Shakhnaza Zhanatove and
Lara Peco. The doubles point went to the Mustangs with a UIU forfeit at No. 3 doubles and the No. 2 doubles match went unfinished with Cora Delich and Hannah Starke leading 5-3 over
Lavanya Singh and
Deimante Krivickaite.
In singles, the Mustangs won matches at No. 6, by forfeit, and at No. 5 where Hanna Himmelman defeated
Chelsea Scott 6-0, 6-1. UIU was winning the matches at No. 1 behind the play of Zhanatova (6-4, 3-0) and No. 2 with Krivickaite (6-3, 2-3), but both matches were stopped and went unfinished due to the impending weather and the fact that SMSU had earned the four points needed to claim the victory. Singh retired at No. 3 singles due to injury, while
Lara Peco trailed in the No. 4 match when the dual was stopped.
Upper Iowa will head to St. Cloud, Minn. next Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16-17 for a pair of NSIC duals against St. Cloud State University and the University of Minnesota Duluth.
