The Peacock women's tennis team dropped to 1-5 this spring after a pair of losses in Winona, Minn. on Saturday and Sunday. Upper Iowa lost to the University of Sioux Falls 4-1 and then lost 7-0 to Augustana University.
In Saturday's dual against the Cougars,
Shakhnaza Zhanatova and
Maryke Badenhorst teamed up for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, but UIU dropped the matches at No. 2 and 3 including a hard fought 6-4 defeat at No. 2 by
Deimante Krivickaite and
Lavanya Singh. Badenhorst scored UIU's lone point in No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 7-5 win, while Sioux Falls claimed wins at No. 4, 5 and 6. Krivickaite was leading at No. 3, but the match went unfinished as did Zhanatova's No. 1 singles match.
On Sunday, the Vikings won all three doubles matches and added six more wins in singles. The Vikings only surrendered two games in the doubles matches. Badenhorst put up a good fight at No. 2 singles, but lost 6-4, 6-2. Both Krivickaite and Singh retired in their matches due to injury.
Upper Iowa will travel to Moorhead, Minn. for their fourth straight weekend of NSIC competition on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 1-2. The Peacocks will face the University of Mary on Friday at 1 p.m. and then challenge Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday at 11 a.m.
