The Upper Iowa fell to Saginaw Valley by a 2-0 count in Sunday's match. Upper Iowa performed much better the second time around against a skilled Saginaw Valley team after the Peacocks fell 8-2 in their previous matchup. Before the match the honored their seven seniors, Anthony Velez, Gareth Corrigan, James Agberotimi, Willy Duarte, Seth Russell, Jacob Weingartner and Marko Cirko. After the loss, Upper Iowa moves to 0-15-1 (0-12-1 in GLIAC play) while Saginaw Valley State improves to 11-5-1 (9-4-0).
Saginaw Valley State got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first half. Connor Rutz was able to score within the box on the left side after picking up the rebound off of the shot by teammate Robbie Bruce at the 33rd minute. Play was scoreless for the rest of the first half leaving the score at 1-0 going into halftime. Anthony Velez had five saves for the Peacocks in the first half, a great showing in his first start since Oct.18. Saginaw Valley State outshot Upper Iowa eight to five in the first half.
The Cardinals were able to score again at the 79th minute mark. The two teams battled back and forth until that point. Kairo Coore was able to draw Velez out of net and maneuver around him to score from the left side within the box to put the Cardinals up by the eventual final score of 2-0.
Upper Iowa was able to get shots off on net in the contest but unfortunately couldn't capitalize on any scoring opportunities. Regardless, seniors Willy Duarte, James Agberotimi and Anthony Velez all performed well and played significant minutes on senior day.
TURNING POINT... Coore's goal in the 79th minute shifted the momentum in favor of Saginaw Valley. Upper Iowa was on their way to a comeback, getting shots off on target but Coore's goal made the deficit more difficult to overcome.
PEACOCK OF THE GAME... Senior goalkeeper
Anthony Velez made five saves on 14 shots faced after missing the last four starts. He returned to net seamlessly and performed well.
