Cold Shooting Slows Peacocks at Quincy

Quincy 58 - Upper Iowa 47.

Upper Iowa women's basketball opened their run at the Subway Classic hosted by Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois on Friday night. The Peacocks dropped a 58-47 decision to the host Hawks to fall to 0-4 on the season. Quincy improved to 2-2 on the season.

Cold-shooting from the field and three-point line proved to be too much for the Peacocks to overcome. Upper Iowa converted just six field goals in the first half with three coming from behind the arc. Solid defense and 9 of 12 shooting at the free throw line kept the Peacocks in the game to the tune of a four-point deficit at halftime, 28-24.

Upper Iowa opened the game by scoring the game's first seven points thanks to a pair of free throws by Megan Peterson, a three from Brooke Evenson and a jumper by Jessica Musgrave. After the fast start over the opening two and a half minutes, Quincy answered by outscoring UIU 13-5 over the final seven minutes to take a 13-12 lead into the second quarter.

In the third quarter, the Peacock offense shot 41.7% from the floor knocking down 5 of 12 of their shots, but the Hawks still outscored their guests by one in the quarter. UIU went into the final quarter down five points, but did not make a three-pointer in the decisive frame. While the Peacocks were having their best offensive quarter, the Hawks were using their time at the charity stripe to push their advantage ahead by one more point.

A free throw by Musgrave with 5:56 showing on the clock pulled Upper Iowa within three, 46-43, but back-to-back scores by the Hawks pushed the home team back out by eight points, 51-43, with just under four minutes to play. The Peacocks' last basket came with 2:22 to play when Lexie Lodermeier hit a lay up to get UIU within five, 52-47. Quincy scored the final six points to set the final score and hand Upper Iowa the loss.
