Upper Iowa closed out their time in Quincy, Ill. at the Subway Classic with a game against Maryville University. The Peacocks played well out of the gate, but the Saints put together big offensive quarters in the third and fourth to pull away for the 71-51 win. Maryville improves to 3-2 overall, while Upper Iowa fell to 0-5.
The Peacocks fell behind 12-5 midway through the first five minutes of the opening frame, but UIU closed the half by outscoring the Saints 14-11. The final five minutes featured scores by six different Peacocks.
Upper Iowa maintained their slim lead until the clock moved under five minutes to play in the quarter. A Peacock turnover led to a fast break layup that gave the Saints a 26-25 edge. Maryville finished the quarter on top 32-30 after UIU's
Erica Armstrong hit a jumper in the paint to pull UIU within two.
A 6-0 run by the Saints late in the third quarter allowed Maryville to push their three-point advantage to nine, 48-39. A three-pointer from
Natalie Dinius slimmed the advantage by one by the end of the frame as UIU trailed by eight heading to the final quarter.
Maryville raced away in the opening four minutes of the quarter thanks to an 11-1 run fueled by three three-pointers. The Saints were able to maintain their lead over the final action of the quarter on the way to their 71-51 win.
