Upper Iowa extended their point streak to three straight matches with a 2-1 victory over Northern State University at Pattison Field on Sunday. The Peacocks scored an early goal, added a second score midway through the second half and then had to hold on for the victory after an own goal brought the Wolves within one score. Upper Iowa is now 2-4-3 overall and 2-2-2 in the NSIC, while Northern State falls to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Haley Ramberg scored a goal for the third straight match to put UIU on the scoreboard in the 18
th minute.
Jayna Morikawa intercepted a Northern State pass in the midfield and sent a ball into the box for Ramberg. The sophomore forward got by the defense and slipped a shot past the diving keeper for the score.
Upper Iowa played against the wind in the first half, but controlled play outshooting Northern State 10-5 in the opening 45 minutes. UIU earned 7 corner kicks in the first half.
Facienne Graham took an aggressive run out of the midfield for a breakaway midway through the second half and was pulled down from behind to earn a penalty kick for the home team.
Katie Samuels took the penalty kick and beat the keeper for her first score of the season.
Unfortunately, UIU's 2-0 lead lasted all of 18 seconds. Northern State took the ensuing kickoff and drove the ball to the west side of the field. Shianne Rosselli threw a great cross into the box and a UIU defender knocked it past
Natalie Rudrud in goal for an own goal pulling NSU within one, 2-1, with over 30 minutes to play.
Upper Iowa held on for the victory despite persistent pressure from the Wolves over the final third of the game. Rudrud recorded 7 saves in the match for the Peacocks.
Turning Point… Graham didn't get credit for the goal on the stat sheet, but it was her run toward the goal that forced a foul in the box to give UIU the penalty kick. Samuels buried the ball to the back of the net and gave Upper Iowa the insurance goal they needed to pick up the victory.
Stats of the Game… With the win, UIU has picked up 7 points in the standings with two wins around a tie. The Peacocks have outscored their opponents 6-2 in the last three matches.
