For the second straight dual, No. 19 Upper Iowa tied their opponent in match wins. Unlike Saturday's dual where UIU took advantage of three bonus points for the win, the Peacocks' five wins on Sunday all came by decision while Augustana University took advantage of a bonus point to claim the dual 16-15. The loss drops UIU's overall mark to 6-5 and their record in the NSIC to 3-2.
Maleek Williams got the Peacocks off on the right foot with a 9-7 win over Ethan Cota thanks to three takedowns and a reversal, but Augie didn't let the momentum snowball. The Vikings got an upset at 133 pounds when Brayden Curry scored a 10-7 decision over
Justin Folley (No. 7). Curry took advantage of an early takedown and four-point nearfall to fuel the win.
Wilson Metellus posted his first win as a Peacock with an 8-3 decision in which he scored a reversal and four nearfall points in the final ten seconds of the match to score the win.
Augustana picked up wins at 149 and 157 to move out to a 10-6 lead. Tyler Wagener scored a 14-5 major decision at 149 and Colin Ayers edged
Mac Spotts at 157 by decision 6-4.
Brock Benitz (No. 8) picked up a takedown in the first overtime period to win 3-1 in sudden victory pulling UIU back within one, 10-9.
Lukas Poloncic used three takedowns to defeat
Jordan Gundrum 7-2 in the 174-pound match, but UIU's
Dalton Hahn (No. 10) nearly got the tying major decision at 184. Hahn led 9-3 after the second period over Daniel Bishop thanks to a takedown, four nearfall points and a reversal, but couldn't score the takedown for bonus points in the final period.
With Augie leading 13-12, the featured match of the afternoon came to the mat at 197 pounds. Clayton Wahlstrom (No. 11) outlasted
Nick Baumler (No. 9) for a 3-1 decision and got away from Baumler's last second takedown attempt for the tie.
UIU trailed 16-12 heading into the final bout.
Triston Westerlund scored a 2-0 decision thanks to an escape and a penalty point.
In the end, the one-point difference was all Augustana needed to post the win. The Vikings held an advantage in takedowns 14-8, while UIU had a 5-2 advantage in reversals and a 2-1 advantage in four-point nearfalls.
UIU will return home for a dual with the University of Mary on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. in Dorman Gym.
