Vikings Get Away in Spite of Peacock Three-Point Barrage

Augustana 94 - Upper Iowa 85. The Peacock men’s basketball team set a new high-mark for three-pointers made in a game with 20 at Augustana on Friday night, but Upper Iowa came out on the wrong end of a 94-85 Northern Sun Conference tilt. The loss drops UIU’s record to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in the conference and pushes the team’s current skid to three games.

The Peacock men's basketball team set a new high-mark for three-pointers made in a game with 20 at Augustana on Friday night, but Upper Iowa came out on the wrong end of a 94-85 Northern Sun Conference tilt. The loss drops UIU's record to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in the conference and pushes the team's current skid to three games. Augie improved to 11-4 overall and 7-2 in the NSIC with the season sweep of the Peacocks.

While Upper Iowa was knocking down three-pointers at a great clip (47.6%), their inside game was a bit off. The Peacocks converted 20 of 42 three-point attempts, but only 12 of their 29 shots inside the arc for a shooting percentage of 41.3%. While Augustana didn't try to match UIU from three, the Viking's 10 makes from beyond the arc and their 22 of 25 shooting at the charity stripe proved to be enough to get the win. UIU shot just two free throws in the contest as Augustana attempted 23 more at the line than their guests.

The Peacocks came out of the gate swinging and on fire. Midway through the opening half, Upper Iowa had an 13-point lead 36-23. Over the opening eleven minutes, UIU knocked down 13 of their first 17 shots including 10 of 11 three-pointers. After establishing their early lead, Upper Iowa's shooting began to cool off. The Vikings closed the half on a 22-13 run to cut the gap to four points at the break, 49-45.

After leading for nearly all of the first half, the Peacock men found themselves behind by one, 50-49, after the Vikings scored the first five points of the second half. Jareese Williams hit one of his six three-pointers in the game to put UIU back on top 52-50, but it was the last lead Upper Iowa would have on the night.

Quentin Blaue knocked down a three-pointer, his third of the game, with just under 13 minutes to play in the game. The shot cut the gap to just one point, 61-60, but Augustana outscored their guests 19-10 over the next seven minutes to increase their advantage to 10 points, 80-70, with five and a half minutes to play. The Vikings hit 8 of their 10 shots during the run highlighted by seven points from A.J. Plitzuweit.

Upper Iowa had one last rally and used their explosive offense to slim the margin back to three points, 82-79, in just 87 seconds. The quick 9-2 run was sparked by a three-point play from Joe Smoldt and a pair of back-to-back threes from Williams.

Augustana made four free throws on a pair of possessions, but UIU's Munachiso Okonkwo got loose inside for a dunk and Kyle Haber got a layup to fall to bring the difference right back to three points, 86-83 with just under two minutes to play. Unfortunately, the Vikings put 8 of their 9 free throws down in the final two minutes to increase their lead and get away with a 94-85 victory. The home team did not hit a field goal in the final five minutes of the game, but converted 12 of their 13 free throws.

Plitzuweit led the Vikings with 26 points and 7 assists, while Matt Cartwright added 18 points and 4 assists.

Williams led a group of four Peacocks in double figures with 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting from deep. Chris Olson and Jackson Joens combined for 8 made threes and each scored 15 points. Okonkwo netted 12 points. As a team, UIU handed out 20 assists led by Olson and Smoldt, who each dished out five. Blaue and Smoldt both chipped in 9 points, Kyle Haber scored 4, but pulled down a team-high 6 rebounds.

Upper Iowa's previous team-high for three-pointers made in a game this season was at Drury University when the Peacocks hit 18 in an 83-78 win on the road.

The Peacocks will take on the Wildcats of Wayne State College on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in Wayne, Nebraska.
