No. 20 Vikings Control Second and Third Quarters to Defeat Peacocks

Augustana 71 - Upper Iowa 43. The Peacocks welcomed the No. 20 Vikings of Augustana University on Senior Night in Fayette. Upper Iowa grabbed an early lead heading into the second quarter, but the Vikings dominated the second and third quarters on the way to a 71-45 win.

Augustana improved to 23-3 on the year and 19-3 in the conference, while UIU fell to 2-26 overall and 0-22 in the Northern Sun.

Both teams jumped out to a quick start on offense over the first five minutes of the game. Fueled by a trio of three-pointers including two from Emma Gaber, the Peacocks were tied with the Vikings 11-all with four and a half minutes to play in the quarter. The UIU defense stood tall over the final four and a half minutes surrendering only two points to their guests. Upper Iowa got three baskets in the paint in the final two minutes to claim a 17-13 lead when the horn sounded.

As well as the first quarter went for the Peacocks, the second and third quarters were just the opposite. The Vikings outscored their hosts 47-18 during the middle quarters knocking down 19 of their 30 shots including 5 three-pointers. The dominant quarters changed UIU's four-point lead into a 25-point deficit heading into the final frame. Augie outscored UIU 11-10 in the final quarter to pull the margin up to 26 points when the clock ran out.

Bekka Pierson, Natalie Dinius and Gaber all scored a team-high 8 points, while Haley Martin added 6. Angelica De Paulo and Courtney Schnoor both pulled down 6 rebounds to lead UIU's presence on the glass.Dinius handed out 4 assists for UIU as well.

All five starters for the Vikings reached double figures in scoring led by Logan O'Farrell's 15 points. Paige Peterson grabbed a game-high 7 rebounds.

Upper Iowa honored three seniors following the game. The Peacocks brought De Paulo, Ashley Ray and Ashley Rosenstiel to center court and gave the UIU fans a chance to say thank you one last time.

With the regular season in the books, the Peacocks now move into the NSIC Sanford Health Basketball Tournament as the No. 8 seed in the NSIC South. Upper Iowa will face the No. 1-seeded Wolves of Northern State University of the NSIC North on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m.
