The Peacock women's basketball team fell at the hands of the Golden Bears of Concordia University, St. Paul on Saturday night at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minn. After trailing by 20 points at halftime, Upper Iowa came storming back in the third quarter to get within 9, however, CSP would eventually pull away in the fourth quarter to earn an 87-59 victory. The Golden Bears improve to 9-17 overall and 6-14 in the Northern Sun Conference. UIU drops to 2-24 overall and 0-20 in league play with the loss.
The first quarter was close the whole way, with the Golden Bear leading 19-15 through the first 10 minutes.
Emma Gaber, as she did on Friday night against Minnesota State, hit a three-pointer to get the Peacocks on the scoreboard. After trailing 10-3 early on, Upper Iowa used a 10-2 run fueled by a
Haley Martin long ball and
Casey Miles and
Bekka Pierson getting inside to lead 13-12. A 5-0 run closed the quarter for CSP, and they used that run to get themselves going in the second quarter.
Concordia-St. Paul put it all together in the second quarter, outscoring their guests 22-6 in the period. CSP shot 43% from the floor in the frame, and forced 14 UIU turnovers that turned into 11 more points. Points in the paint played a big factor as well, as the home team earned a 20-10 advantage in that category in the first half.
Upper Iowa put together its best offensive quarter in the third, scoring 24 points. The Peacocks started to put together a run to get back in it, as
Amanda Cartney and Gaber hit consecutive three pointers. With 2:15 to play in the third, Upper Iowa trailed 54-45, and had momentum on their side. However, the Golden Bears used a 7-0 run to stretch the lead back to 16, and they would not give in the rest of the way. CSP outscored UIU 26-14 in the fourth quarter en route to their 87-59 victory.
Courtney Schnoor led Upper Iowa on Saturday off the bench, scoring a career-high 15 points on 5-6 shooting from the field. Her career-best 6 rebounds led the Peacocks in the game as well. Cartney added a career-high 10 off the bench, and connected on 3-4 from downtown. All-together, 10 Peacocks got in the scoring column.
UIU will head back home for the final weekend of the regular season next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16-17, as they host the Wildcats of Wayne State College and the Vikings of Augustana University. The Peacocks will honor their three seniors,
Angelica De Paulo,
Ashley Ray, and
Ashley Rosenstiel on Saturday for Senior Night.
