Wildcat Defense Takes Control

Upper Iowa played host to the Wildcats of Wayne State on Friday night in Dorman Gym to begin the final weekend of the regular season. Wayne State’s defense put the clamps on the Peacock offense in the first half and rode a big halftime lead to a 69-38 win. WSC improved to 23-6 overall and 17-4 in the NSIC, while UIU fell to 2-25 and 0-21 in the conference.

WSC improved to 23-6 overall and 17-4 in the NSIC, while UIU fell to 2-25 and 0-21 in the conference.
 
A pair of freshman post players came off the bench for Upper Iowa to lead the team in scoring. Courtney Schnoor paced the Peacocks with 10 points to follow her 15 from last game at Concordia University-St. Paul and Savannah Domeyer netted 8 points. Bekka Pierson added 5 points and 6 rebounds.
 
Wayne State had 12 players notch points in the scoring column including three that reached double figures. Paige Ballinger led the Wildcats with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 7 blocks nearly picking up the triple-double. Wayne State dominated the glass to the tune of a 50-26 advantage in rebounds.
 
After a pair of baskets late in the first quarter by Ashley Rosenstiel and Domeyer, the Peacocks kept within striking distance at the first quarter break, 15-9, but the game took a turn in the second frame. Wayne State held Upper Iowa to three points on 1-13 shooting from the floor in the second quarter and ran to the locker room with a 37-12 lead. WSC outscored UIU 22-3 in the quarter.
 
After halftime, Upper Iowa was able to get their offense going a bit. Schnoor went to work in the paint and knocked down 4-9 of her attempts as the Peacocks scored 11 points in the third quarter and then won the fourth quarter by a 15-11 score.
 
The Peacocks will honor their three seniors following the game with Augustana University on Saturday. Tip for the game is set for 4 p.m. for the home and regular season finale.
