Kyle Haber recorded a career high 18 points and
Jareese Williams had his second 20-point game of the season, but their performances were not enough to lead the Peacocks past the Vikings. Augustana topped Upper Iowa 91-76 on Saturday night as the Vikings improve to 5-3 while the Peacocks fall to 3-5 overall and 0-3 against NSIC competition.
Haber led the Peacocks' efforts in the first half with 11 points, 5 boards, and 3 steals while Williams was a perfect 4-4 from the floor and added 10 first half points of his own. The Vikings jumped out ahead in the first half thanks to an 11-2 run led by Augustana's Trevor Hanson who put up eight points during the run. UIU would answer with a 13-2 run of their own that was kicked off by a pair of threes from Williams and
Jackson Joens. The two sides would head to the locker rooms with the Vikings holding a slim 41-39 lead.
It was hard to do, but Williams managed to put on a better show in the second half than he did in the first, tacking on 15 points including knocking down six shots from beyond the arc. Upper Iowa got to within one point of the Vikings but the Vikings pulled away thanks to a 19-6 run that would give them the breathing room they needed to secure the victory The Peacock defense struggled to contain the Vikings' offense as they put up 50 points in the second half.
The Peacocks three-point offense struggled to get going early in the game, going 0-11 to start the game. Fortunately, the Peacocks found the spark they needed as they hit six of their last eight to close out the first half. Upper Iowa has the highest scoring three-point offense in the NSIC, averaging 10.9 three-pointers per game.
Williams led the Peacocks' offensive charge with 25 points on the night, followed by Haber with 18 and Joens with 11. Haber finished the night one rebound shy of achieving his first career double-double, leading Upper Iowa with nine boards and added seven assists on the night. Â
Upper Iowa will look to pick up their first conference victory next weekend with a pair of conference games. The Peacocks will travel to Minnesota for a game against Concordia-St. Paul on Friday night and then take on Minnesota State on Saturday at 5:30pm. Â
