Three Peacocks finished in double-digit scoring but a complete team effort by the Minnesota State University-Mankato Mavericks resulted in a 89-57 loss for the Upper Iowa women's basketball team who dropped to 3-9 overall and 0-5 in the conference. MSU improved to 4-4, 1-3 NSIC.
Despite Upper Iowa's second-best shooting performance of the season, Minnesota State led wire-to-wire and shot above 50 percent in three quarters to top the Peacocks on Saturday evening. Thirteen of 14 Mavericks got into the scoring column and 11 finished with two or more assists.
Both teams finished the first quarter shooting above 50 percent but it was Minnesota State that took advantage of three long balls to carry a 22-13 lead into the second frame. Ally Fink led the Peacocks with six points while Taylor Drost scored 10 early points for the Mavericks.
The Peacocks and Mavericks battled back and forth to exchange nine points apiece to start the 2nd quarter but after a Bekka Pierson layup at the 5:48 mark, the Mavericks went on a 11-2 run to take a 42-24 lead into the break. Upper Iowa was pushing to get themselves back into the game but only converted one of six attempts behind the arc in the effort.
UIU shot nearly 48 percent in the 2nd half but MSU's 56.7 percent on the other end of the court was that much better. Natalie Dinius and Emma Gaber each scored a pair of 3's but the Mavericks stole away eight of UIU's 2nd half possessions which limited the Peacock's opportunities for momentum. MSU outscored UIU 47-33 to end the night ahead 89-57.
Minnesota State dispersed the ball well finishing with 29 assists compared to UIU's 12. The Mavericks also finished with an 18-3 offensive rebound advantage, which led to 22 second chance points.
Dinius (14 pts, 80% FG), Fink (12 pts, 50% FG) and Pierson (11 pts, 55% FG) paved the way for the Peacocks. Pierson and Haley Martin both recorded four rebounds, and Fink blocked three shots.
The Mavericks were led by Drost (16 pts, 63.6% FG), Emmaline Polson (11 pts, 66.6% FG), and Brooke Tonsfeldt (6 pts, 10 reb).
Upper Iowa returns back to Dorman Gym for the last non-conference matchup of the season against Lincoln University of Missouri on Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 5:30 p.m.
