Upper Iowa dropped their final non-conference match of the season 73-48 on Tuesday evening to Lincoln University of Missouri. The Blue Devils improved to 9-2 overall while Upper Iowa falls to 3-10.
After leading by a slim three points at the first media timeout of the night, Lincoln University went on a big 31-13 run to close out the first half and put the Peacocks in a hole they weren't able to climb out of. Ally Fink's jumper pulled UIU within two at the 4:01 mark but the Blue Tigers took advantage of 10 second chance points and 14 points in the paint to take a 20 point advantage into the break.
Lincoln continued its offensive onslaught in the second half by opening the 3rd quarter on a 13-2 run. Upper Iowa battled back with a 13-3 run of its own thanks to scores from five different Peacocks. Emma Gaber got things started with a layup before four consecutive scores came from Caylin Rufus, Marina Peinado, Laker Ward, and Natalie Dinius. Rufus added another bucket at the end of the run to give Upper Iowa its highest scoring quarter of the night. The Peacocks scored four 3-pointers in the final frame led by Gaber with two.
Lincoln University finished with 42 points in the paint and 17 second chance points. The Blue Tigers outrebounded the Peacocks 37-23 with a 15-5 offensive rebound advantage.Â
Gaber finished with 17 points fueled by three 3-pointers to lead the team. Natalie Dinius added seven points and Caylin Rufus chipped in six. Laker Ward and Rufus each finished with five rebounds.
The Blue Tigers were led by Bre Coleman (19 points), Alecia Gulledge (10 rebounds), and Zoi Thompson (7 assists). Zhanesha Dickerson came into the game averaging a double-double but was held to 0-for-8 shooting to finish with one point and six rebounds.
Upper Iowa will host Winona State University on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 2Â p.m. in Dorman Gymnasium.Â
