Golden Bears Defend Home Court Against Peacocks

The Golden Bears led wire-to-wire in a Friday evening matchup that saw Concordia University, St. Paul capture a convincing 85-43 victory over the Peacocks who struggled to generate offense in St. Paul, Minn. Concordia-St. Paul picked up its second NSIC win of the season to improve to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference while Upper Iowa falls to 3-8, 0-4 NSIC.

The Golden Bears led wire-to-wire in a Friday evening matchup that saw Concordia University, St. Paul capture a convincing 85-43 victory over the Peacocks who struggled to generate offense in St. Paul, Minn. Concordia-St. Paul picked up its second NSIC win of the season to improve to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference while Upper Iowa falls to 3-8, 0-4 NSIC. 

Upper Iowa was held to 10 or less points in three out of four quarters, gave up 38 points off 25 turnovers, and was out rebounded 37-23 in the loss. CSP shot 49.1 percent from the field and was productive from beyond the arc, converting 10 of 22 attempts. 

Concordia-St. Paul hurried out to a 21-6 first quarter lead thanks to five scores from downtown and 10 percent shooting by Upper Iowa. Ally Fink scored the Peacocks lone basket of the quarter at the 2:57 mark. UIU opened the second frame on a 5-2 run fueled by another Fink bucket and a Natalie Dinius triple, but the Peacocks were held scoreless for the next 5:08 to eventually trail 38-16 at the half.  

The third frame was UIU's most successful frame as a team. Upper Iowa scored 18 points on 45 percent shooting while limiting its giveaways to a pair. Savannah Domeyer put up four quick points in the first minute followed by Dinius' second 3-pointer of the night at the 7:39 tick. Three consecutive scores by Bekka Pierson, Emma Gaber, and Haley Martin capped off a 14-8 run that pulled the Peacocks within 16. The Golden Bears answered with a 12-4 run of their own to round out the quarter ahead 58-34. 

Fink tallied four more points in the final period but CSP tripled the Peacocks' scoring to finish out the game 85-43. The Golden Bears shot 90 percent from the floor and 87.5 at the line in the final leg.

Martin and Fink both led Peacock scoring with eight points. Fink recorded her scores on 57.1 percent shooting and Martin went 3-for-6 while chipping in four rebounds and two steals. Laker Ward also registered four rebounds to go with a steal and an assist. Marina Peinado handed out a team-high three assists.

Lindsay Dorr filled the stat sheets for the Golden Bears with 18 points, six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Anna Schmitt added 16 points and six assists. Kyrah Fredenburg pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.

Upper Iowa will face Minnesota State University Mankato tomorrow night for a 6 p.m. tip-off. MSU fell to Winona State University 79-69 on Friday evening.
