Peacocks Drop NSIC Opener to Winona State

Slow second half for Peacocks leads to 50-72 loss in Upper Iowa's first NSIC game of the season.

The Upper Iowa men's basketball team fell to the Winona State Warriors 72-50 on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors put a stop UIU's three-game win streak and drop to 3-3 while Winona improves to 4-2 on the season.

The Peacocks and Warriors battled in a tightly-contested first half that saw the lead change seven times and neither side get ahead by more than four points. Joe Smoldt paced Upper Iowa's offense with 12 points in the first half. The Peacocks hit 46.4 percent from the field and hauled in 15 boards during the opening 20 minutes.

The second half was a different story as the Warriors held the Peacock offense to just 16 points in the second half. After a strong first half, the Peacocks trailed by only two points, but the Warriors pulled away from the Peacocks with a 16-2 run. During that run, the Warriors went 7-9 from the field including two three-pointers.

Smoldt led the Peacock offense with 14 points against the Warriors. Saturday's effort marks the fifth time this season that Smoldt reached double digits and brings his average to 16.4 points per game. Kyle Haber pulled in a career high seven boards and was Upper Iowa's leading rebounder. Sophomore Tyler Giron made his Peacock debut and scored three points in his first game for Upper Iowa.

The Peacocks will return to action on Friday, taking on Wayne State College for the first home NSIC game of the season.
