The Upper Iowa men's soccer team capped off the season with a 1-0 shutout over the Southwest Baptist Bearcats Sunday afternoon. The win brings the Peacocks to 5-9-2 on the season and 3-5 against MIAA opponents.
The Peacocks took the lead in the 49th minute when
Italo Martins Soares linked up with
Tate Lofdahl who was able to fire a long-range shot that found its way over the top of the Bearcat goalkeeper. The goal was Lofdahl's third of the year and his second game winner, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma Baptist.
Peacock goalkeepers
Nikolai Gogol and
Bradley Kaufer split time in net during Sunday's match and combined to record the team's fourth shutout of the season. Kaufer made five stops in the clean-sheet for the Peacocks while Gogol had four, giving him 100 saves on the season. The 2018 campaign marks the first time that the Peacocks have recorded four clean-sheets since the 2015 championship season.
The Bearcats and Peacocks played a pretty balanced match as each side took six corners throughout the course of the game. Southwest Baptist held a slight edge in shots, outshooting the Peacocks 16-11. However, Peacock goalkeepers recorded nine saves and kept Southwest off the board while the Bearcats made four stops and allowed one goal.
The Peacocks finished the season 16 goals, led by
Italo Martins Soares who netted five of his own. In net, Peacock goalkeepers combined for 112 saves and held opponents scoreless on four occasions. Upper Iowa will be returning a solid core for the 2019 season but will say goodbye to seniors
Bradley Kaufer,
Joaquin Alonso, and
Aaron Morgan, who concluded their Peacock careers with Sunday's 1-0 shutout against Southwest Baptist.
