The Peacock volleyball team swept Winona State University in Fayette on Tuesday night to claim the season sweep and improve to 13-7 overall and 6-6 in the Northern Sun. The sweep was Upper Iowa's fifth 3-0 win in the last six matches.
Upper Iowa dominated the first and third sets, 25-12 and 25-17, forcing the Warriors into 11 errors in the first set and 5 more in the third, while only scoring 19 kills in those sets. The Peacock offense played well in the first and second frames with 12 kills in each set, but in the third, UIU converted 18 kills and committed only 3 errors to hit .441.
For the match, Winona State came up with 33 kills while hitting .094, while Upper Iowa racked up 42 kills to hit .282.
In the second set, Upper Iowa jumped out to a big lead just like the first and third sets, but Winona State rallied to push the Peacocks to the brink. UIU led 17-10, when WSU went on an 8-3 run to cut the gap to two, 20-18. The Warriors slimmed the margin to one point at 22-21, 23-22 and 24-23, but Upper Iowa found the final point needed on an
Anna Winter kill to win 25-23.
Winter led the Upper Iowa offense with 17 kills (5.6/set) and a .341 hitting percentage.
Kaitlin Niedert added 8 kills, while
Bethany Lovhaug (6),
Lauren Wombles (5) and
Haley Poula (4) combined for 15 kills.
Malissa LeClaire served up 34 assists (11.3/set) and added 9 digs.
Madi Meier dug up 15 balls and
Haley Weepie added 13.
Kasey Brennan and
Gabby Holmes both recorded 10 digs in the match. Wombles posted 6 blocks in the match as six Peacocks got into the block party for UIU.
The Peacocks climbed into a tie for 8th place in the Northern Sun with Minnesota State University, Mankato after the victory. Upper Iowa will travel to face St. Cloud State University and the No. 7 University of Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13.
