Upper Iowa's football team put it all together on Saturday in Minot, N.D. The Peacocks posted a 44-9 victory over Minot State University after executing in all three phases of the game. UIU is now 2-4 on the season, while Minot State falls to 1-5.
The Peacock offense racked up 452 yards thanks to 162 yards in the air and a new season-high 290 yards on the ground. The UIU defense limited the Beavers to 280 yards of offense and intercepted three MiSU passes including one for a defensive touchdown by
Mitchel Siech. On special teams, freshman
Jonathan Argueta-Herrera made all three of his field goal attempts and averaged over 54 yards on his 10 kickoffs.
UIU ground out drives early on against Minot State averaging 7 plays per drive with an opening drive of 13 plays and two series that reached 10 plays apiece.
Argueta-Herrera converted his three field goals by the midway point of the second quarter as Upper Iowa worked out to a 9-0 lead. Prior to halftime, quarterback
Brent Lammers found freshman
Bralin Simon for an 8-yard touchdown pass and catch to give UIU a 16-0 lead at halftime.
The Peacocks continued to pitch a shutout through the middle of the third quarter. Lammers found
Alexander Stevens for a 57-yard touchdown pass and
Antoine Conner capped off an 8-play, 51-yard drive with a 4-yard dash into the end zone. Upper Iowa started their drive at their 49-yard line after forcing a turnover on downs by the Beavers.
Trailing 30-0, Minot State finally got on the board with a safety after a punt pinned the Peacocks at their own 1-yard line. The home team followed with their only scoring drive of the day when Ben Bolinske connected with Lofton Klabunde for a 2-yard score.
The Peacock defense put a stamp on their effort for the day at the end of the third quarter when
Mitchel Siech intercepted a Bolinske pass at the MiSU 26-yard line and returned it to the end zone for the defense's second score of the season.
Upper Iowa added the only points of the fourth quarter to the scoreboard when
Ryan Parmely crossed the goal line on an 11-yard run to put the visitors ahead 44-9. Parmely, who played in his first action of the season after returning from injury, picked up 81 yards on 12 attempts.
Parmely led the running backs in touches and yards, but six additional players each had at least two carries.
Jon Deprey carried 10 times for 73 yards, while
Matt McDonald carried 6 times for 56 yards. Conner rushed 7 times for 26 yards and Lammers picked up 24 yards on 12 carries.
Lammers completed 72.7% (16-22) of his passes for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns. Stevens grabbed two passes for 65 yards and a score, while
Skyler Lehman and
Brandyn Tulloch each nabbed 4 catches.
Jordan Rommes recorded 14 tackles including 13 solo stops, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks and
Isaac Barrett made 11 tackles including 7 solos.
Nic Patterson added 9 tackles and an interception. Siech picked off a pair of passes and now has three interceptions on the season.
Upper Iowa will return to Harms-Eischeid Stadium next Saturday, Oct. 13 for their only home game in the month of October. The Peacocks will welcome the Beavers of Bemidji State University for Homecoming Weekend. The teams are slated for a 2 p.m. kickoff in Fayette.
