Upper Iowa Scores Four-Set Win Over Bemidji State

Upper Iowa picked up their 15th win of the season and moved over .500 in the Northern Sun Conference with a four-set win over Bemidji State University on Friday in Fayette. The Peacocks dominated the first and fourth sets, but the Beavers battled in the second and third sets. BSU won the second set to tie the match at one set apiece, but UIU rallied to claim the win and improve to 15-8 overall and 8-7 in the NSIC.

In the first and fourth sets, Upper Iowa racked up 28 kills and only one attack error while hitting over .400. The Peacocks won the first frame by a 25-11 score and the final set by a 25-16 score.

Bemidji State used a 13-5 run in the second set to sprint out to a 18-9 lead. Upper Iowa battled back into the match outscoring their guests 10-7 over the remainder of the set, but the Beavers held on for a six-point win.

In the third set, Upper Iowa took control early 14-10, but a 6-0 run by Bemidji State gave the visitors a 16-14 lead. The Peacocks rallied with a 9-2 run fueled by 4 kills off the right hand of Lauren Wombles. With a 23-18 lead, Anna Winter and Haley Poula closed out the set with a pair of kills and Upper Iowa took a 2-1 set lead.

The offensive success in the first and fourth sets, was offset by struggles with attack errors in the middle two frames. UIU combined for 29 kills in the second and third sets, but also tallied 15 attack errors.

Winter led the Peacock offense with 20 kills, while Wombles sparked the rally and ended the match with 12 kills. Kaitlin Niedert added 10 kills. Malissa LeClaire handed out 43 assists and also recorded 14 digs. The back line was led by Haley Weepie and her 22 digs, while Kasey Brennan posted 16 digs.

Upper Iowa returns to Prochaska Court on Saturday to face the Golden Eagles of the University of Minnesota Crookston at 3 p.m.
