The Peacock women's soccer team was shutout on Friday afternoon by the Augustana Vikings in their home opener at Pattison Field in Fayette. Upper Iowa trailed 2-0 at halftime, and an early second-half goal put the game away. The 3-0 loss drops UIU to 1-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Northern Sun Conference. With the win, Augustana improves to 4-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in league play.
The Vikings controlled the first half, outshooting the home team 12-5.
Caila Petrie earned four saves in the half, but the visitors put across two goals to take the early lead. In the 22nd minute, Samantha Tymkowicz scored off a rebound after taking the initial shot. The ricochet came right back to her, and her second shot went in to give Augie the lead. In the 36th minute, Grace Behm scored on the left side to push the lead to 2-0.
Upper Iowa went into the 20 mph wind in the second half, and were unable to get a shot attempt in the stanza. Augustana outshot UIU 15-0, and scored early in the half to put the game away. After a Peacock foul, Ellie Knowles was on the receiving end of a free kick, and scored on a header.
Petrie finished with nine saves, but was outgained in corners 11-2. Augie also held a 12-2 advantage in shots placed on goal.
The Peacocks will head back on the road to Wayne, Neb. on Sunday to battle the Wayne State Wildcats. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
