Upper Iowa's defense paved the way to their eleventh win of the season in Dorman Gym on Friday night. The Peacocks swept the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead in a Northern Sun Conference match. UIU improved to 11-2 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC, while MSUM dropped to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
The Peacocks dominated the first and third sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-10, but came to their final winning margins by different means. In the first set, Upper Iowa forced their guests into 12 attack errors and knocked down 8 kills to control the frame. The offense took over in the third set; UIU put down 14 kills and only committed two errors to hit .324.
As controlled as the Peacocks were in the first and third sets, their attack got inconsistent in the second set. UIU recorded 12 kills, but also tossed out 8 errors due to the Dragons' blockers. MSUM tallied 5 blocks in the second frame and matched their hosts point-for-point until late in the set. The Peacocks trailed 21-20, but scored five of the final six points in the set to close out the set 25-22.
Haley Poula had two kills in the final five points to fuel the UIU winning run.
Malissa LeClaire led the Peacocks with 21 assists and 20 digs on the night.
Gabby Holmes added 15 digs, while six other UIU players notched at least two digs.
Bethany Lovhaug denied 5 shots at the net as part of the team's one solo block and ten assisted stops.
Haley Weepie tallied 9 kills, while
Anna Winter and Poula each chipped in 7.
The Peacocks will get back onto Prochaska Court on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host the #19 Wolves of Northern State University.
